Mission: S04 Episode 02 The Hackers Backdoor (Main)
Location: USS Tomcat Briefing Room
Timeline: MD: 00

[ON]

After all questions had been answered, the Captain decided it was time to close this briefing off with a rundown of the new retrofitted ship. For this, she called Paul up to speak. The guy looked a little lost, but he managed it well.

"Okay, this is the last bit of the briefing, then we can all go to our stations or medical", she said, and then looked at the MCO and MXO "I want you both to come to my Ready Room after the ship is underway. This will be both after your Medical sessions, understood?" The Captain asked.

Janeway said nothing but nodded.

"Aye aye ma'am," Cassandra responded, also giving a respectful nod.

Then the Captain looks at the Winchesters, "Paul, Serina, I will need to speak later as well, but you will for the launch of the Tomcat. Paul, you will be the one at Helm Serina Navigation. Any questions?" The Captain asked.

"Captain, I do have one question: what is the bridge rotation for the Tomcat?" Paul asked, leaning back in his chair, knowing he would need to conduct a full systems check before they left spacedock.

"Standard Lieutenant Winchester three shifts Alpha Bravo and Charlie, you and Lieutenant Donovan will be Alpha Shift, the rest I will leave you to sort out", the Captain responded.

"Copy that, Captain," replied Paul, now thinking of the roster he could use for the rotation on the other shifts, whilst looking at Serina, who was not looking happy with him.

oO I hate this and the mood swings I ...grabs a cup añd was about to throw it. oO 'damn someone please grab the cup' and I am completely helpless when a mood swings, and well, you all saw. Serena pulled herself together and apologised to the entire crew, and sat down, face turning red with minutes showing her anger.

Paul looked back at Sereina and could see how she was coping with the briefing, as she needed rest. but! He was going to need sleep before the baby was born to be able to fly the ship.

Maggie sat next to the Winchesters, sipping coffee and watching the interactions. She figured she'd better get used to these dumb briefings because Serina was getting too pregnant to fly, and she'd probably have to step in for a bit when they were both on family leave. Maggie hoped not; she didn't have a single iota of leadership skills. She smiled at the Captain. "Good morning, ma'am," she said. For once, Maggie had turned up in her proper red uniform and no sunglasses. She still wore way too much makeup, but she would fight that battle later.

"Morning, Lieutenant, so nice of you to join us!!" The Captain said with humour in her voice, "We have been here an hour or so, so never mind

"Good morning, everyone. A gorgeous new day has blossomed. I bought a project to light. Crochet a blanket. I did things like that and crochet shawls, and it looks good," Serina said, smiling. Any requests for..." Serena said as she sat down, as this was a briefing.

The Captain looked at Serina with a raised eyebrow oO Mood swings, poor Winchester, Oo she thought to herself, hiding a smile.

Lamia was sitting, listening to the briefing, picking up a glass of chilled water, and she sipped it as she watched the interactions between those sitting at the table. Given that she was pushing 8 months, Lamia wasn’t on full-time duties anymore, having reduced her hours considerably to accommodate maternity leave. She still liked to be kept in the loop regarding ship-wide events, though.

Okay, some of you know him; some may have seen him about. He is the husband of Lieutenant Colonel Somers, and he is here to give you a brief rundown on the new retrofit and upgrades done to the Tomcat," Somers said, then looked at a guy in a mustard-coloured shirt. "Thank you, Captain. Greetings all. I am Lieutenant Commander Paul Sharpe. A bit about me, I am a fully trained Security officer and cleared to be a CoS/CTac, and I am also an experienced Engineer. I have a speciality in computer encryption and decryption. I will give you a brief rundown on your retrofitted ship. Any greater detail, you can see Commander Hawksley later and pester him about it" Sharpe paused.

"Now here is the image of the top of what the new ship looks like", he paused and activated a holo projector on the table.

TCTop

"You can see she looks a lot different to the stock Akira Class; the different saucer shape is to accommodate the layout of the new quarters. All Officer quarters have holoemitters installed, so for those expecting, you can create a nanny while you are on duty. The ship's style has changed slightly. The reason for the saucer shape change is to accommodate 74 One-man drop pods on the dorsal section of the ship. She also has enhanced Type eleven Phaser arrays; this is the highest that such a ship class can accommodate, so do not go expecting Starbase-level phaser arrays. *pauses* The torp pod on the roll bar now houses quantum torpedoes instead of photon, the PDS on top of it fires Micro Photon torps. She has the latest version of Ablative armour, and her space frame has been strengthened and straightened out. There are also transverse bulkheads installed, a physical backup should the atmo barriers fail for some reason," he paused.

"Here is the Bottom or the Dorsal view of the Tomcat!" he said and paused as he changed the image of the ship in the hologram.

TCBottom

"Here you can see the location of the drop pods; they are close to the center of the saucer. Any questions on what I have covered so far?" Sharpe asked.

"Hell of a rewrite of the Tomcat specs" Serina said, looking over the underside of the ship.

“I think the incorporation of the holonanny is a wonderful addition” Lamia offered with a smile.

"I looked into the ship's history and realised the drop pods are a requirement for the area of space the Tomcat operates in and the challenges she faces," Sharpe said.

The Chief of the Boat nursed his coffee like it was the only thing keeping him alive. Both hands wrapped around the mug, elbows planted on the table, eyes half-lidded. The briefing droned on, one officer after another circling their points like vultures with nothing to pick at. Stone wanted to lean back, close his eyes, and start sawing logs to break the monotony. But he wasn’t stupid. That’d get him noticed, and not in the fun way.

What was the mission here, anyway? Break in a new boat or chase some hacker ghost across communications? The way people were talking, even they weren’t sure. Compromise? On a system that had been booted up for a month? Please.

He took a swallow of coffee that had gone tepid and grimaced. Next time, he was packing his pour-over coffee kit. Instant swill wasn’t going to cut it on this so-called shakedown.

The roster still gnawed at him—too many names that didn’t sit right—but that was a problem for later. For now, he played the role. Silent, patient, waiting for his turn. If they needed someone who’d actually dropped before, he was the guy. Probably the only guy. The last pod he rode had been more of a death trap than a vehicle, but command seemed to think surviving that made him a good fit here. Lucky him.

He thumbed through the D8A3 specs, lips curling in a half-smile. Teardrop design. Ablative coating. A door you could tear off and call a shield if you were desperate enough. Inside, you were strapped into a crash web while the computer did the flying. “Course correction” controls—right. More like “pretend buttons” to give grunts the illusion of choice.

Hit atmosphere and the thing spat out drag panels and decoys, like a piñata shedding candy, while praying the enemy bought the trick. At a click up, braking rockets fired, hopefully not too late. Side panels stuffed with rations, ammo, odds and ends—just enough to keep you alive long enough to wish you weren’t.

He chuckled under his breath. Coffin. That was the nickname, and it fit. Not because the pods killed you—though sometimes they did—but because the second that hatch sealed, you might as well be in one.

Paul asked, " Where are the Hangar bay and shuttle bay on the new layout?" As he began to take notes for his pilots' next drills, he was going to be set on the new layout of the Fighter crew.

"They remain in their original place, Lieutenant Winchester the middle of the ship like the original Akira Class", Sharpe responded.

Cassandra already knew about the new specifications and design of the Tomcat. She was good friends with several engineers who had helped Hawksley with the upgrades. Now that they had finished discussing the mission concerning the hacker, she felt restless. She wanted to leave. The room felt stifling. Or perhaps it was because she couldn't take a full breath due to her injuries. Now she had to see Somers after this briefing. Both a blessing and a curse. Surely, the people who had tried to kill her would assume she would tell Somers or possibly the table of officers about their presence on the station. They had her communications tapped, however. There was still a chance she could stop them from taking undue action against the station as long as she kept her mouth shut. Oh, how she longed to slam the table and declare that they had a real enemy right here on the station. That assassins roamed among them, and they were all in danger. She couldn't, though, not until she knew C'Tirr and her daughter were safe. So she waited, silently now.

Serina's mind was racing around, and she agreed with her husband about the fighter bay. "We need to see it and check everything out". Serena said, sitting back in her seat gently. "In the meantime, what can we do before all of the changes take effect?" Serena said finally.

Leland paused. Tight-lipped. He turned to Donovan. ‘When do the 'changes' take effect?...’

“Naw. See. The changes. The new stuff. It's been completed over months. I oversaw the Project with Lt. Commander Sharpe while you all were on board the last mission. Lilli and I were guests aboard the Starbase. “That’s when the changes were crafted. You were all on the Sovereign Class Vessel. Remember?”

Then again. He didn’t know the new Chief of the Boat, who seemed to have a complex growing by the minute. What were everyone's moods? This was a happy time… A new freaking starship. Everyone had to check it out; well, this was the checkout. “Our mission. Called a rundown…” Leland shook his head in disbelief, taking a drink of his silver mug of double cream, double sweetener.

Ross turned his head with a smile. “Well. Sickbay is just a real surprise. Well done. Love all the new equipment by the way!” Ross quipped as he reviewed the notations that the crew was all given on their pads to access. The briefing was led well. Nobody seemed to want to be there, and even Ross sensed this. “All bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, are we?” He smiled and looked at everyone. He didn’t get it either.

“The drop pods. Excellent idea. We can do a lot more with a whole contingent of Marines on board, which should help in various mission strategies we’ve never been capable of before.” He even knew that, and he was the CMO. ‘Since when were Starfleet officers carrying moods and opinions of operations?’ This wasn’t a democracy.

The briefing room door opened, and in walked Lieutenant Commander Dodd. "Greetings all, and so sorry I am late for this briefing, but I just got back on the ship," Dodd stated as he headed to the open seat near the door. "I look forward to getting to know the new updates with all of you, and I will also be adding an update to the mix with the help of a few fellow crewmates." Dodd then acknowledged the captain as he was moving to the last open seat.

Jasmine from he seat looked up, a big smile showing on her face "Welcome back, Commander Dodd. We will talk later, but for now, have a seat if you can find one," Somers said.

"Roger, Ma'am." Dodd then took the last seat and began focusing on avoiding the random thoughts from the room.

Paul looked up "Pleased to meet you, finally, Mr Dodd, your CEO has been well trained; he used engineering jargon that made my eyes go all over glassy", Sharpe said with a hint of amusement.

"Well, he learned from the best," Dodd replied with a devilish grin.

Lamia offered Remington a warm smile. She was glad he was back to join them once again. She didn’t speak openly but sent a telepathic message of welcome.

Looking around and remembering the CAGS comments, "Lieutenant Donovan, is it! Those changes were all done as Commander Hawksley said, while you were all on your last mission, your precious launch bay and recovery areas are the same, so while you are free to inspect things, all changes are final," Sharpe said, then looked around again.

"Okay, as no one seems to have only comments and no questions, I will continue", he said, looking at Donovan with a baleful glare.

The next two Images are the front and rear; they are mainly for visual information reasons. The shape of the saucer may have changed, but the basics of the Stock Akira class remain, the struts and roll bar with the torpedo launcher on the top may have altered shape and position, but this gives the ship a more compact profile," he said and then showed two images of the ship.

After a moment to let the new visuals sink in, he turned the projector off "Now, when the ship was stripped to the space frame, it had a lot of dings, dents and weakened areas. These were straightened out, and the whole frame was reinforced when it was altered.

Support brackets for the internal structure were also reinstalled and strengthened. The ship also now has Transverse bulkheads installed; these will only activate should the emergency shield system for sections fail. There is an updated Security level with the latest cells and other such devices. The armouries have also been updated, so security is tighter. Anyone other than the Security Chief or their Deputy will need to use their ID Card they were given to enter, but you will also be scanned at the entry to the armoury, and you will be asked for the reason you need to go into one of them," he paused.

"The level known as Marine Country now has its own state-of-the-art firing range and holodeck, the largest on the ship, not much bigger than a standard one. This will be used for training for missions; it is not programmed for leisure activities of any kind. It has a wide variety of military-based training programs," he paused again and inhaled.

Science and Medical have been upgraded, and this ship now has a larger medical database and equipment, plus the Science Department now has the same type of Science package that a Nebula or Nova Class ship has. I assume that is right with you, Lieutenant Thompson?" Sharpe asked, looking at the Chief Science Officer.

Cassandra nodded in understanding.

Serina's head nearly exploded after she put it all together: "You rebuilt the Tomcat from her hull and gave her a lot of work...*pause* in the original space frame. And to reiterate, the differences from a Sovereign class to Akira class are noticeable to a degree. Therefore, I am happy to be back home on the Tomcat," Serena said, finally finished and sat back down, biting her tongue as a wave of sharp pain rippled across her belly.

Maggie leaned over. "Do you want me to escort you to Sickbay?" she asked. "I don't mind...." Please, gods, free her from this meeting. She did not care nor understand the differences in various ship class types. She wasn't an engineer. Why should she?! As long as she knew where the hangars were, she was fine.

Serina looked at Maggie, gritted her teeth, and tried to stifle the scream that was about to explode from the pain making her eyes tear. "Maggie? hold me... Argh.... the pain...." Serina's face drained of colour. Breathing rapidly, "Get me the doctor. Something doesn't feel right."

The pilot simply shrugged at Serina.

Sharpe looked at her briefly, a little concerned this time, the woman was not well he looked around "Where is Doctor Ross?" he asked and was directed the the Marine sitting down on the opposite side, he looked at the Doctor "Lieutenant Ross, you might want to give Lieutenant Donovan a check up after the briefing is dismissed, I do believe she is having pain in her belly" he said remembering how she tried to hide her wince.

Ross was concerned, nonetheless. Currently, he was listening to the schematics of the vessel, as was everyone else.
His head sharply turned to Donovan. He stood up from his seat and then slapped his com badge right then and there.

“Computer. Emergency site-to-site transport, Lieutenant Serena Donovan and me directly to Sick Bay emergency bed one.” With that, there was a shimmering blue, white steams of particle light as Serena and the Doctor were beamed straight out of the Mission Briefing to Main Sick Bay.

What was left were Donovan and Ross’s empty seats, with their supplies on the briefing table...

Lamia had watched with concern; she not only saw but felt the pain Serina had been in. She just hoped Ross could help with whatever was wrong.

With that, he moved on "As mentioned, the saucer section has changed shape a little, as has the whole ship in general. The Phaser arrays are now Mark elevens, the heaviest on any Akira, and this was only made possible as the space frame and supports were strengthened to allow for the higher-classed Phaser arrays; the ship still has the same amount as a Stock Akira, so those, along with quantum torpedoes and Photon torpedoes, make the boat have good offensive weaponry" he paused.

"The Tomcat now has the latest version of Ablative armour and upgraded regenerative shields. She also has holo emitters throughout the ship, except in the Enlisted quarters, as they are bunk rooms. However, everywhere else, you may have noticed that the walls are white. All holodecks have been rebuilt and now possess new and established programs. When each of you had your orientations, you were given ID Cards; those were the first stage of what the system is now, so what you were told you will need to make sure," he paused and looked at Ross.

"I do not know if you have seen it yet, Lieutenant, but the rebuilt medical is state-of-the-art. I do not know what most of the devices are, but all are the latest that Starfleet has to offer. Any questions so far! Do ask them, as now is the time," Sharpe said.

Stone shifted in his chair, restless. He wasn’t even sure why, but the room felt like the Academy all over again—too much silence, too many pauses. Finally, he spoke up.

"I’ve been thinking about the ID cards or ID tags," he said, his tone even but edged with concern. "Good system, good encryption. But until a hacker’s caught, they’re a weakness. I’ve seen it done. I’ve done it myself on missions. It doesn’t take much to copy one and spoof access. That could get someone into critical areas of the ship."

Sharpe looked at Stone, "Those cards have a base code Chief that I created, while it is not infallible, the code is extremely hard to break, but you are right, nothing is safe with that Hacker out there, but for now they seem to be giving Starfleet a wide berth", Sharpe said.

He leans back, looking at his data on the PADD, looking back at Sharp."I will trust you to stay on top of that. I hope we are not already being compromised by the data coming from the star base. Thank you for bringing me up to speed with the IDs." said Stone.

He let the words hang a beat, then added, more levelly: "On another note, I inspected the flight deck. It’s fully operational, impressive even. But the pilots need to run through the SOPs again to make sure they’re squared away."

He turned toward Lieutenant Commander Dodd, a faint smile breaking the seriousness. "Glad to have you back, sir. Covering personnel for you was wearing me out. I don’t envy your job."

"Glad someone was able to cover for me while I was working on a side project. We do need to get together afterwards." Dodd replied with a look of appreciation for Stone's covering of the personnel side of things.

Stone reached for his coffee, then paused. "Sorry for the interruption, Captain." He took his sip, letting the quiet settle again. He knew he still needed a word with the XO about a few personnel issues that wouldn’t leave him alone. But that could wait.

"Chief, I do believe those SOPs you mentioned would be best if you spoke to the CAG or DCAG", Sharpe commented, looking at Stone.

"No worries, Chief, you are doing your job", the Captain responded with a smile.

"We call that a shotgun blast, Sir. Oh, look, they are here. And to let you know that the fight deck is good, I am sure there will be a tweak or two in the future," replied Stone, taking to Sharpe.

*Clears throat, ok, I think I covered the majority in brief," he said, then looked at the Captain, "the ship now also has an experimental holographic power core transfer, only to be used in an extreme emergency, Captain and then it is a fifty-fifty chance of boom!" Sharpe said.

"Holographic power Core, okay, Paul, please put it in simple terms, I flunked Engineering", the Captain said.

Sharpe nodded, "Put simply, it is something I have been working on for a decade or more. When I could, basically, you have a holographic warp core that can be activated on the holodeck. This will allow it to send emergency energy via a special transfer node to SIF, environmental systems, engines and shields, but for a maximum of five minutes, for safety, the longer it runs, the greater chance of a catastrophic event, " he answered.

Jasmine looked at him with a 'What the hell did you do to my ship' vibe, calming herself. "So in an extreme emergency, I have a holographic warp core that is configured only to dispense power, and the safety time limit is five minutes, is that correct, Commander?" she asked.

"Yes, Captain, but remember *holds up a finger as he speaks* the longer it is active, the bigger the chance of explosions happening" Sharpe answered.

Looking pained, "Who else on this ship has this knowledge?" She asked, a little alarmed at the thought of a hologram supplying real power from the holodeck, which used a slightly different energy.

"Yes, Captain Commander Hawksley has all my specs and is aware of the problems", Sharpe answered and saw Jasmine visibly relax as she looked at Hawksley.

"Well, okay then", she said, standing up and looking around the room "Okay, as asked for, does anyone have final questions for Commander Sharpe before he returns to the Starbase?" the Captain asked.

Faith pushed off the wall where she'd been holding up this entire time. Snatching a PaDD from some random spot, because she can. Tapping on it for a few seconds. She set it down and swiped her hand to throw the schematics up on the main room viewer.

"We can also help finish working on this. I call it Chain Reaction Pulsar Weapon, or CRPW for short. What it does is a type of contained energy pulse that increases in power as it hits and bounces off its target(s). The final hit will be exponentially more powerful than when it started, and more than a quantum torpedo."

The Captain looked at Benson, "Nice Idea, but put it on the back burner, but keep working on it, the Tomcat may not be able to equip the weapon, but I am sure the specs would be of use to Starfleet", the Captain said.

"I'll keep on it, though, if this works out right," Benson paused a moment to double check, "It shouldn't need a new launcher, just the torpedoes themselves have to be worked on."

Cassandra had questions. Unfortunately, the painkillers in her system had started to wear off, and sweat had begun to bead down her back. She had watched Dodd enter with a mixture of relief and fear. She wanted out of here and needed out of here soon, like now. She forced herself to stay calm to take even, measured breaths. Don't draw attention. Just let the briefing end.

Dodd sensed the mixed emotions from Matthews and was not sure what prompted that reaction, as he had just got back on the ship.

Jasmine noticed Matthews and looked at her, "If you have no questions, Lieutenant, report to medical immediately", she said, then looked at Ross "Lieutenant Ross, if you do not have any further questions, escort Lieutenant Matthews to Medical, and you'd better take Lieutenant Donovan with you, as she is not looking too chipper" She finished.

"Dr. Corsair came back onboard with me, and she should be in Sickbay if you need assistance, Lieutenant Ross," Dodd added as he sensed more emotions from both Matthews and Donovan.

Cassandra shook her head carefully. "No questions for now," she stated, being cautious as she got up. She was woozy, and it took effort to make her movements look fluid and natural. She knew the jig, as they say, was up. The fact that she was being ordered to medical and all. At least having Doctor Ross around would keep Doctor Hawthorne away for a while. Thank the galaxy for small blessings. She wasted no time heading for the door.

Since Ross had already beamed out of the meeting, citing an emergency beam-out for Lt. Donovan, his seat remained empty with no response...

"Captain, I am amazed at how this ol' ship is looking after the refit. The Engineering team did a terrific job. I am going to be trying to get a physical tour of her so I can get familiar with her once again." Dodd added to the conversation.

"When we are underway, Number One, also, if you need to speak to Leland, he had a massive hand in the rebuild", Somers said to Dodd.

"Understood, I am happy to be back in the scheme of things and will be getting with the new Commander in due time," Dodd replied. "Glad our girl got a facelift and tummy tuck. She is looking very sexy now."

Ensign Alexi Michelle had stood towards the rear of the room, listening and looking at the holographic displays. It was indeed impressive, and there were several modifications she would need to familiarise herself with to do her job to the fullest, whatever that would be now that they were on the new and improved Tomcat. Most, if not all, of her questions had been asked and answered. She was concerned, however, when not one but two officers seemed to need medical attention. What were the odds of that happening? She made a mental note to look deeper into the reasons for their abrupt departure from the meeting.

Sharpe looked around "Well, it seems the questions are over, thank you, Captain. I hand the briefing over to you," Sharpe said and stepped back so Jasmine could take his place *Loudly clears throat* "Okay, while Lieutenant Ross and Ensign Otes Ze take Lieutenants Donovan and Kildare to Medical, I have some final things to say" She paused.

"If you need any more information about the refit, speak to Commander Hawksley about it. Okay, now the initial Assignments for the bridge. At the helm will be Lieutenant Winchester, and at navigation will be Lieutenant Febvre. *Looks at Raider 3* It is time you got some bridge experience, Lieutenant, and expanding your experience base is a good thing." The Captain paused.

Maggie fought the urge to make a face, and instead she nodded. "Yes, ma'am," she said. She was a fine navigator, but being on the Bridge with so many...redshirts made her nervous.

"Copy that, Captain," replied Paul, who was now concerned about his wife, who had started to go into labour and had been taken to medical.

With a nod, she moved on to communications, which will be Ensign Michelle. You will attend that post, as usual. Lieutenant Benson will be at the Security/Tactical station, Lieutenant Commander Hawksley, you will be at the bridge engineering station, only for the launch, obviously. Commander Dodd will be in the XO's chair *gives a mysterious look at Leland* possibly, for those initial assignments, are there any questions?" Somers asked.

Mags shook her head. She had none. "No, ma'am, nothing from me," she said.

Faith gave it a little thought for a moment, then shook her head as well, "Nothing I can think of at the moment."

"Nothing from me, Ma'am," responded Paul, who leaned back in his chair. He asked, " Permission to go to medical," as he needed to be at his wife's side.

Alexi looked surprised at her assignment in communications on the bridge. First, she was security and second, she did not usually have bridge duties. "Excuse me, but are you certain you did not have another officer in mind for that position?"

The Captain looked at Michelle, "All my crew must be flexible, Ensign, so no, yours was the first to come to mind", she answered, then looked at Winchester ", Yes, Lieutenant Winchester, you may go to Medical with Lieutenant Donovan, she added.

Alexi nodded to the Captain, "Understood, Captain Somers. I shall perform to the best of my abilities."

Leland replied, as usual, in confidence. "Acknowledged, Captain Somers." He was happy to be on the main bridge, where he could see all the operations come together, finally as one. He would be best positioned to intervene if there were any issues with other departmental systems. At the moment, his mind was on Matthews. He was concerned as he watched her on his pad make her way to Sick Bay. Leland had already established communication with Dr Ross to prepare for Cass. She didn't look well. As soon as he could, he would check in on her.

Looking around, "Okay then, if there is nothing further, you are all dismissed, we depart within the hour", Somers said and watched her Staff leave the room.
