Mission:
S04 Episode 02 The Hackers Backdoor (Incidentals)
Location: Holodeck, 01, USS Tomcat
Timeline: Current
[ON]
Todd had been quiet the whole way to the holodeck, just holding Maggie's hand tight in his big rough one. He led her through the arch and into the surprise he had ready.
The holodeck opened up into a quiet Earth forest clearing right at sunset, golden light filtering down through tall holographic trees and soft moss covering the ground underfoot.
A little stream bubbled nearby with fireflies just starting to blink on and off in the warm air, and the whole place smelled like fresh grass and wildflowers after a light rain.
Maggie stood there beside him, her auburn hair catching the golden light, and those bright green eyes of hers. Her small frame looked even tinier next to his hulking El Aurian build, and the gentle swell of her belly under her shirt made his heart squeeze.
Todd towered over her like always, broad shoulders and thick arms that could lift half an engine core, yet his face was all soft nerves and love right then. His dark hair was a little messy from running his hand through it too many times.
Peanut and Butter, their two goofy bunnies they got together way back when they started dating, were already hopping around like they were the kings of the place, nibbling at the holographic clover right by Maggie's shoes.
Those little guys had been there from the start, when Todd and Maggie first fell hard for each other and the bunnies too.
Todd wiped his hands on his pants, feeling more nervous than any engine room emergency.
He pulled out the small box and dropped down onto one knee right there in the soft moss, looking up at her.
"Maggie, I know we've been unofficial and all but Leland Hawksley my best buddy in engineering sat me down and explained how you Earth folks do this. He said the engagement ring comes first, not the wedding one, and a man gets down on one knee to ask proper. I'm an El Aurian so our ways are different but I want to do this right for you. With Peanut and Butter here as our witnesses, will you take this ring and marry me for real? Be my wife Maggie, official like? And ya know with our little one on the way too. You're the sweetest, kindest person I've ever known and I love you more than I can say."
Todd on his one knee looked upward to his Maggie, expectantly, admiring the woman he had the luck to snag as his, forever...
Maggie had no idea what Todd was doing. Her husband could sometimes be a little silly. She loved it; it was one of the things that had attracted her in the first place: his awkward silliness. Still, she let him lead her to the Holodeck for what she assumed was a picnic date or hiking. So she’d dressed for such; her Starfleet issued yoga leggings and a tight black tshirt over her sports bra. She was already starting to “show,” probably due to the fact that she was underweight and also wore clothes that were meant to draw attention instead of cover her bits. Of course, that all changed when she and Todd became serious. She was already eating more and better, but she still tended to diet and exercise more than she should have. It was a work in progress but she’d already put on a few pounds and the baby was healthy so far.
She took a seat, a bit confused about what was happening, plopping onto the floor. She wasn’t yet used to the way her body moved now, so she was less than graceful. She looked around and smiled. “You brought the buns but not the cats?!” She giggled. Then Todd took a knee and pulled out a jewelry box. She gasped lightly but held out her hand. “Thank you, Todd,” she smiled and leaned into him. “I love you, Todd, and I can’t wait to have our baby.” The hormones had caused her to be a little bit more sensitive than usual, and she started to cry a bit from the happiness.
Todd leaned in to hold Maggie's head to his, as he didn't say anything. He was solemn and so happy. Maggie made him happy. At one point, Todd never thought he would ever meet someone. Then... There was the Fighter Pilot who told him off... At that moment, he was hooked.
He didn't like to see her cry, he didn't understand. But at the same time, he knew that humans were like this when they were experiencing birthing hormones. He read everything there was he could get from that dork Dr. Ross.
"You made me so happy." Todd gently wiped away Maggie's tear of joy with his larger engineering thumb. He did not want to overwhelm Maggie with their child, since she already was experiencing enough. "Soon. We will have a little bunny of our own. I am so grateful to you for giving me, us our Son to be..." His freudian slip...
"I mean, girl too. If its a girl!" He sputtered. He sat now next to Maggie on the side of the bench in the meadow, just holding her as he looked at the ring now on her finger... He had placed it on her wedding finger, he double checked with his hawkish eyes. "Good. Good. It is on the right finger. Now it is locked. You are mine." He winked a bit cockily this time. "All mine."
Leland had taught Hewitt well.
Maggie laughed. "A son would be nice. Happy tears," she said, wiping her face on Todd's shirt. "And I am forever yours now," she said. Her voice was still shaky from the emotions. If all she was going to do for eight months was cry, she might just die. She reached out for one of the rabbits, and put it in her lap. The animal was soft and quiet. They had amassed a whole menagerie of animals, plus plants for Maggie, and now the baby would grow up with the buns and cats.
Todd scooped Butter up before the rabbit could bolt for the stream. He held him against the front of his buttoned shirt and glanced at the ring on Maggie’s finger.
“Good. Right hand. Fourth finger. Leland was clear.”
Maggie chuckled. "Yes, that's how it's done for us Human," she said. She held up her right hand to show him that it was positioned correctly.
Butter immediately went for the nearest button, nose and teeth working at it like it was a challenge. Todd tried to pry him off with his free hand while the rabbit’s back feet kicked against the khaki cargo shorts.
“Those stay closed,” he muttered.
One button came half undone anyway. Todd sighed and held the rabbit out at arm’s length.
Butter kicked hard with both back feet, caught Todd square in the chin, and launched himself free. The rabbit hit the moss, did two quick hops, and immediately started chewing on the edge of Todd’s cargo pocket like nothing had happened. Todd rubbed his chin, stared down at the rabbit, then looked at Maggie.
“He votes yes. With assault.”... "How about we go get dinner? Rabbit is on or off the menu?" Todd raised a single brow.
Maggie gave him a LOOK.
"That is NOT funny," she said. "Yes, dinner first. Then dessert," she said, winking at him.
Todd loved it when Maggie gave him the LOOK. It was unmistakably adorable to see her that way.
"Good. I am hungry." Todd plunked away the Rabbit at his side.
"Computer. Send Peanut and Butters back to the Hewitt Quarter's, Site to Site. Energize."
The two prancing rabbits in vicinity of Maggie and Todd then were gently beamed back to their quarters. The Rabbits were actual perfect companions with their two other loveable Kittens.
Todd had crafted a sectioned off area of their larger quarters where the animals could be contained, but comfortable.
He then helped up Maggie from the bench, lending her his shoulder. She was becoming more drained lately with the little one inside of her, and Todd noticed. He took note to be more careful with her. Her temper was as gentle as well... Which he loved!
Maggie smiled, and let Todd help her up. She was trying to be less stubborn and let him. "Thank you, Todd," she said.

Deck 03, Observation Lounge
Entering the observation lounge, Todd seeked out a table that was near the windows as usual. They both loved the stars.
Extending the chair for Maggie, he helped his Wife to sit. Todd then gave a wink to the nearest lounge attendant. There was only one on duty at this time, Trelane D'Sora, a notorious gossip... She had nodded back, she would be around when she was able since it was in the late evening. Todd and Maggie liked to eat later in the evening as they had alot of things to do, both being Engineer and Maggie still overseeing some Fighter operations, yet was considerably now limited.
"How are you doing with all that fighter paperwork? Last time you said you were overlooking some re-fit requests of that Madrie?" Todd asked as he sat down in his side of the table.
"It's going well. Better than I thought. It still sucks that I can't fly, though," she said, pouting a little. She DID understand, though. If anything happened, even in a practice flight, it was very dangerous. Still, she was going to complain about it all the way until she gave birth.
"What about you? What does Leland Hawksley have you doing?" She asked him. She liked to hear about his work.
The room was comfortable. Quiet with usual Federation orchestral tunes. The lights were calm, and dimmed at this time of evening, yet the room was still a buzz with late guests of the Tomcat crew, mingling, chatting occasional laugh. It was relaxing.
Todd leaned back in his chair and glanced out at the stars for a second before looking at her again. “Leland’s got me stuck on the dilithium matrix recalibrations… same stuff as always… That man never runs out of jobs… He was grinning like crazy earlier though… after I told him about the ring. Said I finally did it proper.”
The attendant passed by with a tray and Todd gave her a quick nod. “Anyway… you said the fighter paperwork’s going better… You definately sound less stressed about it than last week.”
He paused, then tilted his head. “You feeling okay tonight…? You looked a little tired when we left the holodeck.”
Maggie smiled. "Yes, I am feeling lovely. Happy. But yes. The Docs said fatigue is common, especially in early pregnancy. I am fine, though. Hungry," she said.
Todd shifted in his seat and smirked a little. “And if Leland asks me tomorrow how the proposal went… I’m blaming the rabbits for the assault part… Butter still owes me a button.”
Maggie laughed.
He waited, watching her face. “So… what do you want for dinner…? I’m starving after all that kneeling and rabbit wrestling.”
"Steak, potatoes, and salad," Maggie said.
Todd grinned wide… that big soft one he saved just for her…
“Steak… potatoes… and salad… Classic Maggie order… Right after ‘I love you Todd’ of course…”
He gave the attendant a quick nod… “Two of those… Extra potatoes for the little bunny…” then leaned across the table… voice dropping all warm and playful…
“You’re glowing tonight… even more than the stars out there… And I’m still the luckiest engineer in the fleet…”
"Well. That's because I am happy. And yet, you are," she said, smiling a bit. "And I love you, Todd Hewitt," she said. And it was so.
Todd blushed. He loved hearing those words from Maggie.
"Keep it up. Tonights round two..." He winked.
She smacked his knee under the table, but smiled.
Just then the Federation Server had came back to the table with the ordered food. Todd had already entered it in to the request for the table, before they had both arrived...
"I'm so hungry... I could eat a whole shipment of livestock." He deadpanned Maggie. "I could even eat half of your plate." Todd grunted.
"I don't think so," she said. "*I* am the one that is feeding TWO people." She picked up her fork, and dug in. "But I wouldn't be opposed to dessert," she said.
Todd already had his fork loaded with steak and potatoes before Maggie finished talking...
He stuffed the bite in and chewed slow with eyes half closed...
A soft hum in his chest...
Then he pointed his fork at her plate with a crooked grin...
“Two people huh... Well that little bunny better leave some potatoes for his dad... Or her dad... Because I am not sharing tonight...”
He stabbed another piece of steak and popped it in... Chewing with one cheek puffed out... Head tilting side to side in that weird little rhythm he got when food was good...
“Dessert though...” he mumbled around the next mouthful... Then swallowed and leaned in... “I might trade a few potatoes for whatever sweet thing you have in mind later...”
Todd stacked three potato slices like a tiny tower and lifted the whole thing into his mouth at once... Cheeks full while he gave Maggie a proud look over his fork... Just happy and hungry and hers...
"So... We need to think of names soon. I would love to know what you might have in mind. Have you been thinking?" He questioned. "Then the Starbase. We have to plan the Starbase. But, all in time my sweet." He spoke with some food in his mouth...
This one she was ready for. "Calliope if it's a girl. Talin if it's a boy. I read in the database that that's an old El Aurian name," she said. "Don't talk with food in your mouth!! That's rude," she said, her tone low. She shook her head. They were in public!!
She rubbed her eyes a moment. "However. The Starbase thing...I think I might ask for a permanent assignment there. You can work on the Tomcat, and when you come in, we'll be there. We can't have a baby on the Tomcat; it's dangerous for the type of missions we run," she said. "And I can fly out of the Station. I mean...it's not the same, but it's enough to keep me occupied."
Todd set his fork down the moment the words left her mouth...
He looked at her across the table... quiet and steady... then reached over and covered her hand with his...
“No...” he said... voice low...
“I will not leave you, Maggie...” Todd's face was assured like stone.
His thumb brushed once over his wedding ring...
“Wherever you go... that is where I go...” He leaned in a little...
“If you take the Starbase... I transfer the same day... Engineering can find someone else... You and the little one are my home now...”
Eyes never leaving hers...“You pick the place... and I will be right there beside you... Every night... Every morning... Locked in... Just like this ring...”
Maggie smiled.
"And sorry!? I'm hungry here... Jeeezzzz..." He scoffed. And returned to shoveling his food, closing his mouth when he did with a grin...
"... For the record. I love that name. I knew a boy on the homeworld named Talin. And for the girl, if we have one. I would love to call her Calliope! Et tu... Français, Oui?" Todd spoke some French he had learned in the past 100 years...
Now she laughed. "We have plenty of time to decide," she said. "While I understand the reasoning behind not having children aboard the ship, it does seem limiting to parents, especially mothers," she said. "But we're in this together, right? We'll be ok, then."
She sighed lightly. "Just so long as I can fly after the baby. I'l; be fine anywhere," she said.
She shook her head. "Very good. But it's "Et vous etas Français." She smiled. "I am only half French; my father was American. I'll teach you," she said.
"You will be teaching me and Calliope, or Talin. Together." He stated, having another bite and swallowing this time with a bit more awareness to his eating habits. "I would like to be able to speak to our child in Federation and French. Plus... You can teach me all the bad words, so I know not to say them in front of her, him..." He tried to remember... "Ta... Tab..Tabernac!" He grunted with a wink.
Maggie chuckled. "We can do that," she said.
"Leland and I... We finished that holodeck hockey tourney... Hawk got in it on the ice with one of the Federation wildcards... One nutter sprained my wrist, but I kept play, and hit the net with one goal, and an assist with Leland. He got two!" Hewitt shook his head... "I don't know if he will be playing for the final next week... We will have to see." Hewitt then looked at his wrist. "It's fixed now. I stopped in the Sick Bay. See..." Hewitt then tried to pull his wrist backwards... "Its still works!"
She laughed again. "Please be careful!!" She said. "I need you to be well."
After a few moments of talking with Maggie, the dessert had come over. It was Hewitt who had ordered for them both, taking the liberty, not wanting to have Maggie feel like the only one.
“Two Pieces of Blueberry pie! Warmed with Vanilla Ice cream, each, please.” He beamed. He set his hand to his chest. “I think we deserve this… After our… Goat workouts lately.” He laughed.
“Is that what you want, Maggie? We can get another dessert?” Hewitt asked.
Maggie nodded. "The pie is fine!!" she said. "Thank you," she said. "And another lemonade!"
"And... don't be lax with the lime slice. The glass nearly had a full slice of lemon-lime... I mean... I could have programmed the replicator myself for broader circumferential slices of lemon lime for a lemonade."
Maggie kicked him under the table gently.
"I am feeling bitchy! I am sorry..." Todd let out a deep huff... He grumbled as he leaned his head and mumbled to Maggie... "Leland's leaving Engineering... He's leaving me... ALL ALONE!" He grunted sourly.
Maggie smiled. "It'll be ok," she said. "You will do great. I believe in you."
Without a flinch, Todd stated... "I know I'm great..." He looked at Maggie, holding her hand in his...
"I'm certain I could run a whole team in Engineering... I think Thex likes me. I'm not so sure about this Dodd figure..." He shrugged. "He likes something called Golf... Leland and /him/ play golf.... GOLF... That's not Hockey... I play Hockey... I don't know how to... Gol....Golf."
"Do you play Golf, Maggie?"
"Golf?" Maggie stared blankly. Why on earth would she play such a boring game? She shook her head. "No, why?" She asked him, suspiciously.
"I have played cricket before," she said. "And I did basketball at the Academy."
"Oooo... Basketball. I like basketball." Hewitt then playfully nudged his foot to Maggie's underneath the table... "Hey... I think we should do some basketball sometime." He regarded Maggie. "Perhaps when you're not pregnant, in the future!"
"I will have time out of engineering for us to go to Dr. Ross. If you still want me there?" Todd smiled. "I will be on my best behaviour!"
Maggie smiled and nodded. "Of course I want you there!! You're the dad," she said. "I think," she said, with a sly grin, teasing him. "It's at 1300 on Tuesday."
