Even though she was on maternity leave, Lamia wanted to keep on top of visits with some of her patients. Though she wouldn’t normally take her son with her to appointments, she decided to drop in whilst on a gentle walk around the ship. Pausing outside Jasmine’s door, she pressed the chime, hoping that Jasmine wouldn’t mind her dropping in.
Jasmine was in her quarters, enjoying a brandy. She had learned her lesson with the Bloodwine, and she wore baggy socks in place of slippers, some baggy tracksuit trousers and an equally baggy hoodie, which was partly open and positioned to show a shoulder; her hair was up in a ponytail, but she still looked mentally exhausted. The sunken eyes were not as pronounced now. Her doorbell suddenly sounding startled her.
"Bloody Hell!" She exclaimed and pressed a button near her on the wall, and the door opened. She looked up to see the ship's counsellor holding her baby. She smiled, a tired smile. "Please come in, Mia," she said
“Thank you, Captain” Mia smiled as she stepped inside. “I hope you don’t mind me dropping by. I’m not officially here as your counsellor; I’m on maternity leave after all, but I thought I’d drop in and see how you were.”
*Shaky smile* "I am okay, thanks, Mia. Is that your son?" She asked, indicating the bundle in the woman's arms. "Please have a seat", she said.
Lamia smiled as she took a seat. “This is Wyatt. He was somewhat of a surprise arrival, especially for the poor doctor. I can’t imagine how he managed with having more than one woman in labour.”
"Yes, I heard. I have transferred Lieutenant Donovan to Starbase 51. I think Lieutenant Winchester will be getting a divorce, too, but you never heard that scuttlebutt from me. "Might I hold little Wyatt?" She asked.
“By all means,” Lamia nodded as she gently moved Wyatt so she could hand him over. “It’s a shame about Serena, and I hope they can work out their marriage.”
Jasmine held her arms out and cradled the baby. Without knowing it or realising it, she had a soft look on her face, one that spoke of something she could never have. She gently rocked the baby and looked up "Please have a seat, Mia. It is kind of sad; I am holding the one thing I can never have. You are so lucky," she said.
Lamia took a seat, offering a caring smile. “After I lost my daughter, I felt so empty; I couldn’t even begin to imagine how it must feel for you. I’m struggling with the whole separation at six months part; I’ll be lost without Wyatt when I have to leave him behind.”
Looking at her, "At least you will be able to be with him when not on duty, but you know that an Akira Class is not equipped for long-term child care. I have had an old CMO look at my condition, and they could do nothing, so I have come to terms with my situation, and even if I could, I have a feeling the torture I went through would have made me unable to have children," she responded.
Lamia gave Jasmine a caring gaze. “That’s awful. Given medical tech these days, I’m surprised they can’t do more for you.”
"There is only so much Starfleet Medical can do. The only ones that can cure me now would be the Q, and they have not been seen for years, so I am stuck with my situation," she said, gently nursing baby Wyatt.
"What would you say if I told you that up until recently, my psychosematic injuries were more pronounced than normal due to an alien implant up here!" she said, tapping her right temple.
“An implant?” Lamia gave Jasmine a curious look. “I can’t say I’ve ever heard of anything like it.”
"Nor had I, but there was one there. Remember my capture and torture; I suspect it was put in at some point, but as it is removed, my subconscious has returned to normal, and I have had no more episodes since. You have no idea how much sleep I have been getting since. I had forgotten what a good night's sleep was like," Jasmine answered.
Lamia smiled. “I can imagine! Just continue with your counselling when you leave us, and you’ll be good as new in no time. I’ll admit it’ll be a little odd around here without you onboard.”
*Shrugs* "Well, you have met my cousin Lieutenant Colonel Alexandria Somer; she will be reporting aboard from SB51 and will be a full Captain. No one knows why our mission was cut short or why Starfleet wants to move COs around. But I will still be here, just a Commodore and in charge of a stationary target," Jasmine said with grim humour
Just then, little Wyatt made a gurgling sound. She looked down, and the baby was wide awake, looking up at he,r and he smiled.
"Ok, ay the kid has his father's smile, but damn, he is so cute", she said. Then the smile vanished, and he began to make a hungry sound. "Okay, I think the little one is hungry again. If you need to, you can use my replicator to replicate a bottle," Jasmine said.
“Oh, he’s just like his father with that smile,” Lamia said, grinning as she stood to get a bottle. “Are you sure you don’t mind us hanging around this long? It might take a little while to get Wyatt fed.”
"I do not mind, Lamia. I always loved kids, just unable to have any sadly," Jasmine said as Lamia replicated the required stuff and she handed baby Wyatt over to his mother, and she got herself a drink.
“Thank you, Jasmine” Lamia smiled warmly. “To be honest, it’s nice having the company while Chris is working. Being a mother is a steeper learning curve than I expected, not that I’m not enjoying it.” She tested the temperature of the milk on her wrist before gently offering the bottle to Wyatt, smiling as he gratefully started sucking on it.
"Well, you do know you have six months before the little tyke will have to be moved to the Starbase; on occasion, it would be nice if I commanded a ship like a Nebula or something bigger, then we could have kids on the ship in the long term, but an Akira no matter how modified has a set limit and unlike the Voyager we are not stuck out in the Delta Quadrant," she said.
Lamia nodded. “That’s something I’m struggling to come to terms with right now; leaving Wyatt behind is going to tear my heart out.” She gave her son a longing look as he enjoyed his bottle.
"I know it is sad, but you knew the rules before you got pregnant with little Wyatt. I am sure your relatives or Chris's would move to SB51 to help!" Jasmine said.
Lamia nodded. “I’m sure they would, but I’ll still worry that I’m missing out on important milestones. Our missions sometimes take us away for long periods of time.”
"That is the life of a Starfleet Officer; we go where we are needed. The only way to solve that is to become Chief Counsellor on the Starbase, but then you will have fewer crew to interact with, as a Starbase is not for the faint of heart where duty is concerned, but that will be a question for the next CO should you wish to transfer closer to the time," Jamsine responded.
Lamia nodded. “If I did that, I’d be separated from Chris too. I don’t want to do that. I just need time to adjust to the idea, is all.” She said hopefully.
"Well, you have five months and a few days to get used to it," Jasmine responded "It must also be harder for you, as Chris is a Rifleman and a demolitions expert?" She said.
Lamia nodded. “It is. I do my utmost to be professional on duty, but I do worry when I know he’s going off on some dangerous mission. I don’t know what I’d do without him.” She gently sat Wyatt up now he was finished feeding and gently started patting his back to help the escape of trapped wind.
Looking at Mia's actions, Jasmine was wistful; she hid a yawn. "Sorry, a little exhausted still catching up on sleep after those violent nightmares I got stuck with. You will have to get to know the new CO properly; I mean, last time she was only here for the odd mission; this time it will be her first full Command," Jasmine said.
“I’ll make a point of it,” Mia added with a smile. “We’ll get out of your way and let you get some rest.”
*smiling* "Thank you, Lamia. You take good care of little Wyatt now," Jasmine said, standing and heading to the door, only pausing next to Mia.
"It is strange to think that even with all our advanced tech, we are unable to repair my womb," she said in an offhanded manner.
“It is strange; maybe speaking to the doctor again might shed more light on that,” Lamia added. “You could always opt for a surrogate if you really want a child of your own.”
"I have given up on ever being a mother, have thought about adopting, but I do not want to put any child through stress as I am still dealing with my PTSD," Jasmine said.
“Of course, I can understand that,” Lamia added. “Maybe it’s something you could consider in the future though.”
*Smiling and a final nod* "It seems Wyatt is stirring again. I'd better let you deal with him, and I am tired; it has been nice speaking with you, Mia, perhaps we can do it again at some point!" Jasmine said.
“I’d like that.” Lamia nodded. “You know where to find me if you want to drop by anytime.”
"Of course, *smiling* will see you at the next mission briefing," Jasmine said and watched Lamia leave her quarters. The doors closed; she sighed and went into her sleeping area.
