S'earr sat in his quarters thinking about his meal with Lt. Lee. To him talking about his ways, traditions and culture and Alexandra seemed captivated by it, and it was refreshing. While he didn't like talking about the Homeworld much he did it because Alexandra wanted to know, a female wanted something from him... and he obeyed as custom demanded. He sat wondering if perhaps there was something more or at least more informative that he could do to convey a clearer perspective which was where a holodeck would come into play.
=^= Lt S'earr to Lt. Lee, ma'am I hope i am not disturbing you. I was wondering if you would be interested in a more visual representation of my culture on a holodeck? =^=
=/\= Wow, I am totally surprised to hear from you. I would really be interested in seeing Cait even it if it merely holographic. Did you have a time in mind? =/\= Lee replied.
=^= When it suits your schedule ma'am, I have an open booking with the holodeck. =^= S’earr answered keeping his respectful inflection to his voice with her.
=/\= Aren't you a considerate fella, but I am very flexible with my duties as the past is not going anywhere. However, I am getting ready to file a few reports of some studies I have been finalizing data for. How about we meet tomorrow afternoon? =/\= Lee responded.
=^= As you wish. =^= S'earr spoke softly, once more showing his more gentle yet subservient side to the female. =^= I have unpacked the texts I mentioned during our meal earlier about my caste's history, I can deliver them when ever you like. =^=
=/\= Excellent, I am looking forward to getting lost in them. I will say you can bring them to my office tomorrow before the holosuite time. My office is just the deck below the holosuites so that should work out for both of us. =/\= Lee replied.
The following day
S'earr stood outside her office carrying a wrapped bundle in his hands. The texts he offered her to read, teaming with history. The holodeck awaited them but Alexandra requested the texts just before their holodeck adventure.
S'earr pressed the door come, announcing his presence.
=/\= Enter =/\= Lee stated as the chime signaled someone at the door to her office.
The door opened and Lee appeared delighted to see S'earr.
"Welcome to my office, and thanks for being willing to deliver your historic texts. I am looking forward to discovering more about Caitian Society." Lee stated. "I had some pull and added an extra hour to our holosuite time for today if that is alright for you."
"Most fortunate." S'earr spoke as he walked into the office. As he stepped inside he could immediately smell her scent laced on the air, hardly surprising considering the enclosed office. Walking to her desk he placed the bundle on the table and unwrapped it from its cloth shroud. It was obvious that the cloth was not only intricate in design, but hand made with exquisite detail.
The storage device was a sort of pyramid design but when S'earr pulled on the top, a metal rod came out. The sides opened like petals of a flower and each section held a scroll, all bar one. "When you wish to close it again, push the rod back into place and it will close itself."
In a state of awe, Alexandra was amazed by the beauty of the cloth and the storage device. "What detailed items, they look like well-kept treasures and I will treat all as such." Lee stated. "I am touched to be given the honor of examining these scrolls and the knowledge contained within. I will say the shroud seems like it has a rich history in itself as does the storage container."
Lee then looked over the scrolls and the up at S'earr. She noticed that he was sensing the smell of her from within her cramped office. There were artifacts all about the office but over the years the cramped space seemed to really hold her scent. She realized that his feline attributes thus included a much finer sense of smell so her oder was likely hitting him like an explosion to his olfactory system.
"Did you have any questions? I get a feeling you want to ask something." Lee stated.
"I do not wish to seem rude, but I was hoping we could visit the holodeck right away?" There was more than one meaning to his request, one far more urgent that the other. S'earr was being hit by her scent, strongly within this office, while that scent in itself was not offencive, it's effects could be lasting.
Caitian males from his caste stuck to the old ways, bonding by being drawn to a scent. It was the first stage of a relationship and the most dangerous for him, being in an office, with decor dressed in her scent was like a rag being placed over his nose.
"I am so sorry, by all means let's get on to our planned activity as I am very curious about this exploration of your culture even if it is via a holo-program." Lee replied as she motioned S'earr to the door to the corridor. She totally forgot about her manners and hoped that it did not upset him.
S'earr lead her to the booked holodeck, a few pressed buttons and the computer informed him that the program was ready. The doors opened, past them lay a sprawling city of intricate design. Buildings of white to reflect the sun high overhead. Plants, trees and greenery were everywhere to be seen as if they lived in harmony with the buildings. There were scores of Caitians of all sizes, shapes and colours. It was easy to see the females from amongst the crowd as they were more elegantly dressed than the males.
"This is my home." S'earr spoke, fond memories coming back from a time long in his past. "We have the market place over there." He pointed towards a wall in the distance but from above it there were faint wafts of smoke floating upwards from things being cooked.
Ahead of them was a mountain, a dormant volcano. There was a ringed set of buildings almost like a fortress built into the rocky side. "Up there, is the training school I attended."
Further up almost at the peak was another building of pure radiant white. "Up at the peak is the residence of the Overseer. The leader of the caste."
"This is beautiful." Alexandria replied. She felt a little out of place but knowing it was a hologram was a little comforting to her. "I do want to ask if the coloring in the garments of the women signify anything special, like a status in society or their family unit or such?" She asked really as she was curious because of the matriarchal society that Cait was. She has seen it in other cultures.
S'earr paused as if trying to find a prime example. It wasn't long till he did. "I'll show you." S'earr walked to a female and as already seen him do, he bowed. A brief conversation followed and then S'earr returned with the female who like S'earr towered over Alexandra. "This is a traditional attire for females, bare shoulders for freedom of movement, bare neck should the female be mated and show off the marks, across the chest for support while leaving the stomach bare in the event of pregnancy and comfort. The lower half can be a dress, skirt or leggings dependent on the wearer's needs, there is accommodation to the rear for the tail." He concluded.
The female turned to show the freedom of movement her tail had from the especially designed opening for it. "It keeps us cool, our fabrics are breathable and comfortable to wear." She spoke.
"The colour typically is traditional family colours, sect colours such as warrior, science or religious. Mine are gold and green, for warriors." S'earr concluded . "Of course you are free to wear what ever you like, a choice females enjoy." He stepped aside and there were many males that were walking past in similar attire, only colour varied amongst them while females clearly had more freedom.
"I am shocked to see how different species that evolve on different planets and never meet still develop similar traits and customs. I am liking this introduction to Cait culture and society." Alexandria was still admiring the details S'earr had in this program. "I am all game to keep this exploration going, what is your next educational bit for me?"
The female that had helped explain about their attire smiled, then walked off to join her group again. S'earr bowed at her departure and then righted himself. As he walked with Alexandra down the street, explaining various shops and buildings he came across something important. "There, by the wall." There stood a female seemingly in an embrace with a male, S'earr knew differently. "Caitians bond by scent, because my caste is a matriarchy it is they who decide who they mate with. She is holding his nose to her neck forcing him to bond to her." While not the ideal circumstances to form a life long relationship with, it was however accepted.
Further on down the street there was another female, only this time the male was smelling her offered wrist. As they walked there was another Human woman walking the street of giants and yet not once was she bumped or nudged demonstrating the sheer level of respect and regard help towards females of any race or species. There were very few young present, S'earr knew this was because, like him, they were taken by the caste at a young age for training and visitation was granted only for meeting expectations.
"I am touched to learn more about Caitian culture. I take it if a female desires a male, she is the one to form the bond between them. What if the male is already bonded? What if the female desires a new mate and hers is still alive? I hate to ask that but I am very curious." Lee asked of S'earr. "Also, how long has it been permitted to allow Caitians to pair with non-Caitian species?"
"The female verbally indicates her desire, he will accept. She will invite him to reside with her as females own property, males do not." It literally was the way of it. "Caitian relationships are different to Human ones, once a pair are bonded they scent each other, Caitians can smell it, we mate to one only, for life. Over time a chemical bond is formed," He explained as they walked. "Mixed species pairings initially were forbidden but since we started to explore the stars or ways we're adjusted."
"You are really giving me a great lesson on your species. I am enjoying this time together. This is the type of knowledge most in my field don't get first hand from a member of the culture we are observing, we have to normally put our observations together to come up with the meaning behind the way a culture functions. I will admit that I knew very little about Cait and your culture. I feel like I took a Master Class and I am wanting to learn more. Can we keep this lesson going? I am really learning a lot from not only you but the details you embedded into this program make me think I am on Cait watching this unfold." Lee responded.
"Our ways are steeped in purpose. Every action has a meaning. Males bow to females to show respect but not for one singular thing. The females bear offspring should the they deem him worthy. As a male we protect the female from harm or danger with no consideration to our own safety in the process for we consider it an honour. To be of service to a female." S'earr explained.
"The trials we take to prove our worth, the dangers in them are real. Many males have died on the trials, doing so willingly and with honour because of a female."
"Every female here is provided a residence upon maturity, they are guided towards a field of learning, such as leadership, the sciences, religion or governance. My mother was a educator of science, my father and superior fellows that same path I did, until I departed for Starfleet." The way his inflection shifted at the end hinted that his choice was not well received.
"I do understand that many cultures have a strong tie to their heritage and following that heritage. However, you should be proud of yourself for following a path you wish for yourself. That is how Starfleet came to be. I bet your family is still proud of you even if you opted for a different path to your self fulfillment." Alexandria replied. "Now can we go see one of your temples and maybe a center of knowledge?"
"I can take you to one of our learning centres. Our temples are off limits to off-worlders with no link to the Homeworld." S'earr answered. He outstretched his arm towards a cluster of buildings with various flags draped down its facings with various symbols and markings upon them.
"I would be honored to see a learning center, but at some point I would like to learn more about the religion of Cait even if you can't take me to a temple, I will review all you can provide me about your religious customs and practices. I find that aspect of a culture most sincere."
