Mission:
S04 Episode 02 The Hackers Backdoor (Incidentals)
Location: Holodeck 02, Washington National Park, Lodge
Timeline: Current
[ON:]
The holodeck grid flickered out and suddenly we were standing in this beautiful national park upstate Washington. A bright blue lake sparkled right there between all these huge pine trees that were swaying in the wind, and way off you could see the big grey and white mountain peaks of the Cascades looking all majestic like they were watching over everything. Up ahead in a little clearing sat this cozy log cabin with wildflowers all around it, and smoke was already curling up from the chimney like it was waiting just for us.
Leland Hawksley walked on up the tall grassy hiking path his lean athletic build pushing through the knee high grass easy as anything. His flannel shirt hugged tight over his broad shoulders and solid chest with every step while his strong legs built up from all those years crawling around in Jeffries tubes, kept a steady pace uphill. A bit of sweat shone on his tanned arms and along his jaw as the fresh smell of pine and lake air hit him good. He glanced over at his buddy voice going all soft and thoughtful. “You know Dodd… times like this really hit you how much we been missing. All those years chasing deadlines and warp signatures… sometimes you just need the mountains to remind you what's important—and who your damn glad to be sharing it with.”
"You are correct, Nature and Hiking in Nature are the surest way to unwind and recharge one's core being." Dodd replied. He was not alone so he tolerated being clothed on this hike. He wore some khaki cargo pants which hugged his legs but were loose enough for movement. He had on a loose flannel shirt over a super tight wifebeater shirt. He also had on his favorite hiking boots which is normally the only attire he would have on a hike. "You picked an old program an yet the enhancements of the new computer core have enhanced the details. The breeze and sunshine really feel like we are on Earth." Dodd added to the conversation. "However, you promised a lake house in Minnesota and yet this Washington location is much more grand. I would guess Rockport State Park in ol' Washington. I have not actually hiked here before but have been reviewing it for my next trip back to Earth."
Leland grinned, stepping into the meadow with Dodd, the lake sparkling like crazy right in front of them.
He laughed, short and easy, then nodded toward the water. “Let’s refill here. They say if you chug your bottle and make a wish on this spring stuff, it’s gotta come true. Old hiker bullshit, but I’m game.”
Leland snorted, bumping Dodd’s shoulder as they both stood there grinning at the lake.
Leland chuckled, gesturing to Dodd's shorts choice. “Khaki Bros owning the trail. Nobody’s touching this vibe.”
He raised his canteen in a mock toast
He dropped onto the big flat rock by the edge, legs stretched out, and patted the spot next to him. “You sittin’ or what? View’s too good to blow past.”
He took a long swig from his canteen, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, then held it out. “Your turn, Khaki Bro. Don’t half-ass the wish.”
Dodd moved towards the spot that Hawksley patted. He took the canteen "To our brotherhood." He also then took a long swig and used his sleeve to wipe his mouth. Then he sat down. "Wish this was a view I could have more often and in the true of nature."
Dodd gazed out on the holographic landscape. He longed to be able to enjoy more real nature and more hiking yet valued his position on the Tomcat. He was longing for more in his life. He missed having a partner in pleasure and he missed his downtime. He had been pouring so much into his work to keep busy.
"Leland, I secretly envy you. So young and a family already and you have my old position. Don't get me wrong, I am proud to be the XO on this ship and doing the work I am doing for Starfleet. However, I feel like my life has shifted and thus what was once pleasurable is not the same for me. I feel like I have just been working to get the SANS up and running and then keeping the crew in order. I know I needed this break and I am glad to spend this time with you, my brother." Dodd stated and put his hand on Hawksley's back as if he was an older brother acknowledging his little brother like a right of passage.
Leland sat there on the flat rock beside his old mentor, the warm brotherly hand on his back making him grin at first. But the words sank in deep, and his smile faded as he stared out over the sparkling lake, shoulders dropping just a touch under the flannel.
“Dodd. Sir. Brother.... You flatter as hell, Dodd. Coming from you—the Engineering God who trained me back in the day—that means everything, brother. Truly.”
He let out a slow breath, voice turning quieter and honest. “But it’s not all what it seems. Lilli’s gone real quiet on me lately. Distant. I’ve tried talking to her over and over, keep bringing up the baby shopping and planning. Hell, I even hand-built Little Hawksley’s crib from real maple wood I imported from my family’s heritage farm on Earth. She’s just… not engaging anymore. There’s a drift growing between us and I’m lost. Maybe we need counseling.”
He glanced sideways at Dodd, the confusion clear in his eyes but his tone still kind.
"Leland, you may need counselling but you also may need to get away with her and the little tike and do some real bonding as a family unit. We have all been working and having a child does change the dynamic in a relationship. While I don't have any children, the one I had with Lamia that did not survive did change who I was. I had a telepathic bond with her and we had feelings but the real issue was we were not one hundred percent together due to the nature of how we came to be. My previous relationship Iria Walon was the one I felt was my one chance at a perfect future. We were full on in love and then she up and left to tend to a long lost family member who was her only full on living relative. I wanted to keep my position in Starfleet and so we had to split. I would have like been a father by now with her. Then there was Cole, she was a pleasurable presence in my life that gave me some fun but I felt she was too young and as I was about to try to advance the relationship, she up and left me. So I am saying I am envious of you, it is because you have taken life by the horns and made something more than I have at your age. I am here for you regardless what you may think. I am a person you can come to for anything. I am sorry to hear about your rift with the little lady. If you need to, we can work out a means to have Engineering covered and get you and Lilli off ship to have some time as a family as I know it could help. I would even be willing to demote back to Chief Engineer if needed." Remy replied as he shifted to be more facing towards Leland. He really enjoyed time with the one person he felt more like a brother to than a coworker or even supervisor to.
Leland listened, the weight on his shoulders easing up just a bit as Dodd’s words sank in like a steady hand on his back. He gave a slow nod, eyes warm with thanks.
“Yeah, you’re right, Remy,” he said quiet, voice a little thick but holding steady. “I love Lilli with everything I got, y’know? The little one… who hasn’t been born yet, they’re my world. I’ve been so damn wrapped up trying to fix things on my own I forgot we could just… step away and be a family again. Your advice about getting off-ship together? I’m taking it. I feel like I have to do something in the near future, a short break, sure.”
He didn’t like giving up his work.
He reached over and clapped his best friend on the shoulder, a real smile finally cracking through. “And hey, thank you, man. For listening… for offering to have my back like that. But no demotion, XO. Hell no, not happening. I’m staying right where I am in Engineering—we’ll sort out the leave without you stepping down. Deal?”
Leland pushed to his feet, dusting off his cargos and letting the talk soften into something lighter, easier. “C’mon, brother. Enough heavy talk for one trail, huh? That lakeside cottage ain’t gonna reach us on its own.”
With a nod toward the path ahead, he fell back into step beside Dodd, the two of them walking shoulder to shoulder through the towering pines as the trail started its gentle drop toward the mountain lake shimmering off in the distance.
"You are right, enough heavy talk. But, you know it could be worse. You could be hiking this with Winchester and then it would be the lowest level of Hell or such." Dodd commented. "What made you pick this scenic locale?"
Leland was looking up at the tall pines, where the tops reached a warm bright summer sun, with a blue backdrop. Picking out a gum stick, he offered one to Dodd and then popped in one himself. Chewing, he thought better.
"Yearning for Earth. Home. Simpler days." He lit a soft smile. "I added a Bigfoot mythical creature that will stalk us at night. I hear the howls reach from the western mountain to the eastern side of the lake."
"Really going for the laugh factor are you." Remy giggled and then added "I sensed you had something planned but was not sure what it was." He was just enjoying the time with his young friend and was surprised by his imagination and how much detail he added to the program.
“Remmy,” Leland said, using that nickname with the easy warmth he only ever used when they were off-duty like this—just two brothers kicking around in the woods, no ranks, no ship. The air was thick with pine and spruce, that good earthy smell as they hiked toward the clearing. The A-frame lodge was just up the path.
“I envy you,” he added, glancing at Dodd. “XO in near-record time. And not just cause you’re an engineer—you’re a real leader, man. I run Engineering, but you make the calls that matter for the whole crew, sometimes in a split second.”
They pushed through the waist-high brush and reached the front of the lodge. Leland dropped his pack with a thud, turned to his brother, then looked out at the lake—bright blue in the late afternoon sun, mountains across the water calling like they always did.
“You’re gonna meet your match one day,” he said with a grin, nudging Dodd’s shoulder. “Some sharp redhead commander at a starbase or conference, sliding in next to you in her reds. Try it, brother—you already turn heads on the ship. I see how the women crew watch you.”
He bumped Dodd again, easy and familiar. “Best part? No matter what happens out there… we still got this. Just us, the woods, and zero admirals.”
"And I hope you programmed no pesky mosquitoes or ticks." Remy added with a chuckle. "No captain here either. But I would like to enjoy a holodeck with her at some point." Remy added as he has always had a desire to pursue her but never felt it was right since she was his direct superior officer.
Leland stopped, his eyes like a hawk already beaming in to Dodd’s soul. “You Dawg!!” He growled, and grinned and then punched him into Dodd’s upper right shoulder as he walked closest to the glittering pond.
“I understand about the Command Chain thing…” He breathed outward, taking a pop of his gum, Leland stated, “But Damn. That makes it all the More hotter!” He laughed out, turning red in joy. He smiled at Dodd. “Dude. So how would that go? I know your just wheeling the idea.” He stopped the taunting.
"Dude, I have respect for our captain and thus would never go against the flow without her consent." Dodd replied. "But you are the only person I have shared this with and it has been something in my mind since my Imzadi departed. I have almost become a monk since Autumn left and I am feeling the loneliness in my loins if you know what I mean."
Dodd then stopped and stared over at a cluster of trees to the right of the duo. "You said you programmed a Sasquatch and I think the program has him watching us from just over there." Dodd pointed out the cluster where a furry creature was sort of peering from the foliage.
Leland grinned as they both spotted the furry Sasquatch peeking from the trees. He chuckled and shook his head.
"Damn Remmy, you caught him already? I told the computer to keep him shy. Guess the new core made him bold."
He gave Dodd a solid clap on the shoulder, warm and brotherly, then looked at him straight with real respect in his eyes.
"Listen brother. I hear you about the loneliness. That ache after everything you've poured into the ship. It's real. You've been carrying the XO load like it's nothing, keeping the crew solid and the Tomcat running right. The way you lead, calm even when things get crazy, always thinking ahead. I still watch and learn from you every shift. You're the reason I push harder down in Engineering. Peer to peer, man. I really value that."
Leland's voice got quieter, honest. "You deserve someone who sees that fire in you. Captain or not, when the time feels right and the chain lets it happen, go for it. Life's too short out here. And yeah, no mosquitoes or ticks. Just us, the woods, and Bigfoot sneaking around."
He jerked his thumb toward the lodge, the grin coming back strong.
"Come on XO. Let's get inside before that furry guy decides to crash our dinner. First round of synth-ale is on me, brother."
Leland headed up the wooden steps, glancing back with that easy smile he only ever showed Dodd.
"Alright, I say we have earned our vittles today." Dodd stated as he stood up. "I will say the program seems more adaptive than the old system would have allowed. I think our new computer core will be much faster than what we are used to." Dodd then took a step only to see the sasquatch disappear from view. "What did you have planned to eat once we get to the end of this trail? I am hungry enough to actually eat Gagh at the moment." Dodd added.
Leland almost vomited when he heard the word Gagh. He totally grossed out. “Please. That taste… The feeling… Dodd.”
He coughed, cringing lines over Leland’s forehead. “Maybe that is the only thing we can lure the sasquatch away from the Cabin.” He thought of Dodd in step with him on the pathway, now turning to his burly stature. Now at the lodge, they took a seat on the benches, taking in the inspiring awe....
"We will need to plant Gagh around large pine trees and the lakeside.” He shrugged. If we detest it, that stinky walking goat will love it!” Hawk laughed.
"Buddy, Gagh is not a plant but more like worms in a thick bloody-like slime. Had to eat it when I was on an exchange mission with some Klingons just after my academy days. If I did not eat it, I would likely not be here toay." Remy stated as he held back his internal laughter.
“I’m thinking some nice T-Bone steaks, sliced, pan-fried garlic potatoes. For lunch tomorrow, we can go out on Lake Wentachee for Lake Trout and Walleye! We can take pics of who gets the largest!” He gestured.
"Wow, I am certainly going to need a day of relaxation after this holodeck stay-cay." Remy expressed as he watched Leland's gesture of a large fish.
Dodd then stood up and stretched. He then took off his shirt as it was sweaty and looked at Hawksley, "I am going to enjoy this downtime if we are basically done for the night from hiking; Did you program modern comforts or bare minimal amenities?" Hoping this version of the program had at least a hot tub for them to soak in and continue the verbal side of this bonding time.
Hawksley handed Dodd a frosted mug of synth-ale and raised his own. “To brotherhood… and to you finally admitting you’ve got your eye on the captain.” He took a long drink, then clapped Dodd on the shoulder with a solid, brotherly grip. “Steaks and garlic potatoes are almost ready. We eat, then hit the hot tub and unwind. No ranks, no ship. Just like the old days back when you were teaching me to reroute plasma relays, and I was the wide-eyed lt jg who couldn’t stop asking questions.”
"To me you are still that wide-eyed LT JG and I guess it is due to me thinking of you more like a little brother than a crewmate." Dodd added as he took a gulp of the synth-ale and looked at Leland.
After a hearty meal, the two men sank into the steaming cedar hot tub overlooking the lake, the warm jets easing the day’s hike from their muscles. Hawksley leaned back with a relaxed sigh, passing Dodd another ale. “Man, this is what I needed—good food, good company, no pressure. You’ve always had my back, Remy. Taught me more than any academy class ever could. Whatever’s next for you… Captain or not… you’ve earned some real happiness, brother.”
As Dodd enjoyed the heat of the hot tub, and the time with Leland, he had been thinking. "I know you are looking out for me. I have not really thought much about my future other than getting the new SANS program launched and in service. After that, I would like to settle down and maybe go teach at the academy or maybe even get a ship of my own but I want a ship with children on it. I want to be surrounded by children either the young or the cadets at the academy. That is how I see my future. And if I find a mate and have children, I would give up my commission to be a stay-at-home father." Remy then took a swig of his synth-ale and looked at Leland.
Hawksley listened with quiet, protective warmth as Dodd spoke, steam rising around them while he took a slow sip of synth-ale. “Kids and family, huh? I’ve always seen that soft heart in you, Remy. You’d make one hell of a dad, and whatever future you choose—academy, a ship with kids, or staying home with your own—I’ve got your back, brother.” He paused, his voice sincere.
“But I really want you on the Tomcat with me. She needs someone steady like you, and having my brother serving beside me would mean everything. Think about it.” He clinked his mug gently against Dodd’s. “To your future… and family dinners are non-negotiable.”
The relaxing heat of the hot tub was really making the muscles of Dodd' body feel rejuvenated after the long hike they had. "I really do appreciate that, Leland. I am getting older and I want to give more to the future than just the legacy I might leave as an officer. I want to have my lineage continue. While I am not a pure specimen of a man, I do want to procreate and leave a living legacy like you are doing." The relaxing of his body allowed his mind to focus on is real emotions behind his answer. "I want what I see all my closest friends having. You and Mia both now have families and I want more than just sharing in those. I almost left when my Imzadi departed to be a caregiver of her cousin but I want my position here in Starfleet and I made the sacrifice to let my soulmate depart. I have not heard from her in years and yet I still sort of feel a connection. Then when Autumn left suddenly, I had my heart torn out like in that old earth motion picture, Temple of Doom or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I do feel that I still have a chance at my deep desire to be a father but I want it before I am too old to be fun dad." Dodd stated firmly as he had his hand on Leland's shoulder and gave a firm squeeze as a means to show support of his path in life. "I am also not sure if there is even a snowball's chance in Hell for any relationship with Jasmine. But I am open to finding a chance with anyone who is up for taking a chance to be with me."
"I know many eyes who are checking you out on the ship." Leland winked. "I could definitely hook you up!"
"I am not sure about that, I can typically sense those wandering eyes and thoughts. However, I have not really be paying much attention lately, but do tell." Dodd replied.
Leland guffawed. Laughing as he splashed hard back at Dodd in the Hot tub. He did his best NOT to spill his own Beer can in his hand. Hawk shook his head. “Chief privileges. I cannot name names. I mean, common. Dodd. Like you said. You have radar privileges, man!”
Hawksley held up his hand as he finished his can and cracked it, and then set it down on the side of the hot tub… He relaxed his shoulders, taking in the tall aspen-clad mountain peaks above the park's high-elevation region. Surprisingly, the bugs were not all that bad!
“So, I’m not.” Hawksley smiled and then cracked another beer open. Damn it, he was enjoying his time off. Dodd was the Man! He needed to hear from him on so many matters!
"I respect that, bro. But I have shifted my focus on work and the important relationships I have. Like you and Lamia. I have not really been open to all the random thoughts and emotions." Dodd replied as he too was really enjoying this break from the stress of duty. "Now please excuse me a moment." Dodd stated as he hopped his naked self out of the hot tub and took a sprint for about 200 yards and back to jump back in the hot tub. There was a enough of a chill in the air that it was a reset for his body to enjoy more of the relaxation of the hot water.
"Wow, that felt so good. I have not done this sort of thing in a very long time." Dodd stated as he settled back into his corner of the hot tub. "You are such a close friend that I am overly comfortable with you. I appreciate you being tolerant of my habits and quirks." Hawksley had seen all of Dodd before and Dodd had seen all of Hawksley as well, so it was nothing new amongst the brothers even if they were not biologically brothers. "I also appreciate the little lady allowing you to be out for this time given you have a little tike back in your quarters."
Leland nodded in agreement. He was still laughing at the fact that he had seen his XO run naked ass out across the back grass, the green lodgings lawn, before the lake, and then back towards the log cabin hot tub.
“I know that resets your whole-body thing,” Hawksley had gestured outward to Dodd as he rushed back into the warm water. He then got up and rushed back outward, baring his ass, and, like a beast breaking back and jumping with a giant splashing, swash of water from the hot tub, as Leland jumped back inward as well. He did it just because he could. How else did this Man raise him like a mentor and Fatherly Figure?
Leland cracked open his carton of king-sized, Peter Jacksons, reds, and lit one up, as he breathed out, the smoke clearing from his chest, as he looked outward at the hilly scene… “Damn. Even cigarettes taste better out here.”
"It is all in your mind, you are in a state of hyper relaxation and in that state, all is better even the taste of Peter Jackson Reds." Dodd replied as he glanced at Hawksley. "You know I am trying more to be a big brother than a father figure to you. While you maybe be relaxed, your thoughts are full and all encompassing."
Dodd knew something was afoot. This little retreat in the holodeck would relieve some of the stress but once it was over, he would be back in the stew of the daily activities. He felt something was coming that would change not only his life but that of the crew.
Leland narrowed his brow, taking in what Remmy had just said to him. "Remmy. That is beautiful. Where did you learn to make poetry like that?" He smiled, jestingly.
He turned on the holographic telescreen of the sports game football being played; they both had similar bets in the game. With hours to go, there was lots of time.
"Games got our bets in. Who do you think will bring it home for the Federation Cup this year?" Leland cracked his knuckles, releasing some tension. This was relaxing. He could get used to a place like this someday.
"Yes." He took a drink from his cold beer can, the hot tub bubbling around. He turned off the TV and then turned on the sound system to the Beach Boys in the background.
"My mind is racing. It is hard to keep a balance between home life." He placed out his hand gesture with each hand, "and then you've got your work portion of life. I am not satisfying the home portion. I am confused about the home portion. I don't know what to do about the home portion." Hawksley guffed, his Adam's apple swelling hard.
"From what I am told by all I have learned as a telepath, you know all you need to know about being a father as it is something that should come to you. You are the best dad you can be and that will continue to grow and mature as you raise the little one. If parenthood was the same for every single person, then all of us would be exactly the same and how boring would life be then." Dodd replied. "I am all in on the Vulcans taking the cup as they are vicious on the pitch almost like they are in baseball."
Remy knew Leland was struggling as he adapted to fatherhood and being married. He was so used to the independence that married life was a big adjustment then to add a child to the mix. All Remy could do was to be there for Leland and guide him to continue to be the best man he could be. But in the thoughts he got from Leland, he could sense thoughts from others on the ship and those thoughts were sort of muffled and obscure which is what make the uneasy future he sensed.
"But you know what, we need to coordinate this sort of brotherly time at least once a year and maybe try to make it off ship next time and for like a weekend or a week even. Just the two of us shedding the grind and bonding in nature and with each other." Dodd added.
Leland nodded. “I think that would be good.” He was happy with his marriage to Lilliana Hawksley, his wife and lover. But he needed time with her.
"You know I really like to spend time with you as I know you do not judge me and I think of you as my family, but you need to work out a time to get way with the wife and not just a night here in the holodeck but a real trip away from the ship and if you need child care, I can handle that." Remy sensed that he was thinking about time with the wife and it needed to be addressed. "I am your brother, more or less, and I understand that the spouse is someone that needs your time and I am okay with less time if it means more for the two of you and the baby."
"I know. I know. But I mean, how will this just fix things when we really need is marriage counselling. We won't talk about things like the baby. I can't remember the last time, Remy. Yeah, thats alarm bells." He replied. Concerned, and worried about the situation.
"You make the time to hang with me, I would understand making the time to talk to her. She is your wife and mother of your child. I know there are feelings of love for one another deep inside each of you. I am certain that Lamia could help with counselling if you are each open to it. I am here to help as much as I possibly can while I am not a counsellor I am able to be a means to help open each of you back up to one another." Remy responded. He took a drink of his beer and then looked at Leland. "You are a good man and you just need to be sure to never undervalue yourself or Lilli. Optimism is a surprisingly positive means to helping make situations turnout better."
“I know you’re right. I’ve known for months. I’ve been trying to make time, pushing the ship and work aside. Truth is, I’m scared shitless that if we actually talk, she’ll tell me she’s already checked out.” Hawk looked his brows in concern.
He leaned forward, voice quieter.
“Lilliana… I’ll go if Lilli says yes first. I’m not dragging her into counseling she doesn’t want. I’ve been undervaluing both of us for too long. You’re the only one who’s had the balls to call me on it. Thanks for not giving up on me, brother.”
Leland exhaled and managed a small smile.
“I’ll make the time. For her. For our kid. For us. And if optimism means faking it for a while… then I guess I’ll fake it.”
He leaned back, shifting the mood.
“I want to talk about fun things now. Trips we can plan for months from now. Help me pick something good for Lilli and me?”
Hawksley suddenly leaned forward, eyes narrowing toward the brush line.
“He’s scoping us out. Getting bolder in the twilight.” He gestured to the outcropping. “We’re being watched.”
"Well, you have an interesting program and I am sure he will keep watching us as we are surely great specimens of humanoids for him to admire." Remy replied. "As for trips you can take with Lilli, I would take her to the third moon of Betazed and go to the Serenity Spa. They have it set up to prevent the Betazoids from using their telepathy and so it is a very relaxing resort where you can have her pampered like royalty. Keep in mind that it was founded when Betazed was mostly matriarchal and so women are praised there more then men. But they have services for men as well. Or there is an old Earth outpost on Titan that has been converted to a luxury resort. Drop my name and you can get the Sovereign Suite if it is available and that comes with enhanced privacy with in suite massages and more if you need it. Just avoid Risa with Lilli as it is not romantic and is very crowded with too many tourists."
“Agreed.” Hawksley acknowledged Remmy. He chuckled.
“Sovereign Suite, eh? I will have to check this out.”
“Maybe we could send the hairy dink to Risa. Give the Sasquatch a real paradise. The place has got to be very overrun with tourists, true. And it gives off coupling vibes when we already are. So, Titan,” He rubbed his chin…
Turning on a light bulb. Taking a drink, Leland got out of the tub to sit on the side for a moment; the heat of bubbles was a bit much, so he needed to breathe the cool, crisp mountain air from the porch hot tub. He closed his eyes and breathed in slowly and out slowly. “Whenever you are ready, however, Mr. Bachelor of the Tomcat, we can set up where you would like to, as I’ll be your wing man and disappear when you find the right one?” He spoke with a lilt upward in his voice, accentuating ‘right one’.
"I am going to pursue my deeper desires at some point for certain." Remy responded with a grimace on his face as he knew his brother had the best of intentions on his mind. "I am going to enjoy the freedom of my single status for a little while longer. I do plan to take a vacation after this mission to go hiking like I planned to do a year or so ago and never got to go. The planet I like to go to is one where they limit the number of guests permitted on the surface. I enjoy the solitude there and the fact that I feel more comfortable and can hike the way I really enjoy. I will likely spend a week there basking in the fresh air and the types of terrain on the hiking area. They also have geothermal mineral springs that have healing properties as well. I would share the name but I like to keep that location my secret or it will be flooded with a waitlist when I want to go." Remy added with his grimace still present on his face.
Leland took a slow sip from his glass, then glanced over at Remy.
“Look, I get it. You wanna enjoy being single for a while and that’s fine. That secret planet with the hiking and those healing springs sounds like exactly what you need after this mission. I won’t bug you for the name or anything.” Leland thought that Dodd took good care of himself and his mental health. He had a lot to learn from his older 'bro'.
Hawksley gave a small shrug. “Whenever you’re ready to go after those deeper desires, I’m still good to be your wingman or just disappear. No pressure.”
Leland leaned forward a little, voice easy. “But real question... What’s one big aspiration you’ve got that you think that week alone might actually help you move toward?”
"That is a very specific question, I don't think one week could help me achieve that one big aspiration. To be honest with you, the only real desire I have that hangs over all others is just to be as happy as possible and to enjoy life in the fullest." Remy replied. "I know that one week would make me happy and at peace for that week but ultimately I aspire to find happiness by helping others achieve their aspirations."
Leland sat on the edge of the hot tub, steam drifting up around them. He grinned.
"Alright, enough serious talk... What's the one ridiculous, stupid thing that always puts the biggest, dumbest grin on your face? No deep meaning, just instant happiness."
Damn, he wants his cigarette even in this relaxing atmosphere... not wanting to bother Remy with the smoke, Hawksley thought.
Leland slipped back into the water with a quiet splash, reached under his white towel at the side of the tub, and pulled out the pack. He lit one with a quick flick, took a slow drag, and turned his head to blow the smoke away from Remy.
"The one ridiculous, stupid thing that always makes my day, I have not really noticed but thinking about it, I would say seeing Lamia. She is one of the people I am so deep with and we have a special bond so the sight of her no matter what is going on, makes my day. She makes me happy being in her presence. Even if we are in the middle of a tense situation. I will get that dumb grin on my face for a fraction of a second." Remy replied and was glad Leland blew the smoke in the other direction.
“You mean Kildare? The ship's counsellor.” Hawksley asked. He then chimed in thought as he relaxed, watching the moonlight start to shimmer over the lake just ahead of their cabin.
“Your using your minds together!” Leland tapped at the side of his own noggin, knowing that Mia was also a Betazoid like Remy.
“Dude, Bro. You're both Betazoids. That makes sense..." He then paused, laughed to himself. "Ok. Hear me out. I wonder if someone farts… Can you sense who did it?” Hawksley chuckled. It was a dumb question, but meant to be funny all the same. He respected his Commander as someone he could speak real to when off duty, out of uniform, well rather now both of them stark naked in the hot tub. Leland just wanted to show Remy that he supported his Betazoid culture of nakedness, and the revealing of oneself. It wasn’t sexualized. It was a cultural distinctness that Leland had learned to respect.
"You are so young, but to answer your question, Yes, we can typically sense who did it as their mind will give them away." Remy replied. "I am only part Betazoid, but Ullians have a lot in common and some similar abilities."
Remy then shifted to reach for a beverage over the side of the hot tub, his naked ass coming out of the water and flashing Leland. Knowing human nature, Leland would think something off-the-wall but maintain his cool. Remy sort of did it to see what reaction Leland would give him. To his surprise, Leland was holding his own against the telepath. "Wow, you wanted to say something didn't you?" Remy asked as he sat back down in the hot tub.
Leland snorted into his beer, nearly choking as he watched the full moon rise... twice!
“Remmy, you absolute menace! I was this close to yelling ‘Sasquatch incoming!’ just to watch you scramble. But yeah… I had thoughts. Mostly ‘damn, the lake view improved.’”
He grinned, all teeth and zero judgment, then bumped shoulders. “You’re safe here, brother. Flash away. That’s what families are for... Naked truths and all.”
Hawksley then raised his mug. “To you, finally chasing what makes you happy. I got your back, always. Now quit hogging the ale before I retaliate with my own stellar cheeks!”
"Well, I am comfortable with you since you understand me more than I think anyone else and I do feel you are my family. That will never chance." Remy responded the took his drink for Leland's toast. "Now here is back to you, The best pseudo little brother a guy could get in his life. Love you, bro!" Then offered his glass to Leland to complete the toast.
Leland let out a low chuckle that rumbled in his chest. The tavern air hung heavy with woodsmoke and spilled ale. He clinked his mug hard against Remy’s, foam splashing over his knuckles with a solid clunk.
“Damn right I do, brother. Your family. Real as it gets to me. Blood or not, it doesn’t matter out here.”
He took a long pull, the cold bitterness sharp on his tongue, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and bumped Remy’s shoulder again.
“Best brother a guy could ask for. Love you too, man. Don’t doubt it.”
Leland raised his mug once more, fingers sticky. “To us. Whatever comes our way.”
Raising his mug, "To our brotherhood and our futures." Then he took a huge swig of his beverage. "Now, I need to cool down so I am thinking a need to complete a solo au naturelle walk to bring me back to standard. So if you could excuse me, I will let you boil a little longer." Remy then stood up and become fully exposed to Leland as he stepped out of the hot tub and slipped his flip flops on and started off on a walk to bring himself back to normal. He is so used to hiking naked and being naked when not on duty that knew Leland would understand his need to reset in this fashion.
Leland raised his hand and gave it a short wave, holding it there. "Uhh... Beware of the Sasquatch bro!!" He shouted, seeing Remy walk off buck naked. "I always knew they were the same size!" He muffled, as he took another drag of his cigarette, chuckling. "We're brothers!"

Leland Hawksley stepped into the warm glow of the large log cabin’s kitchen, shirtless in his low-slung cargo pants, the cool air welcome on his bare chest after the beers. He cranked up the portable speaker, letting Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” fill the rustic space, and grinned as he dusted the butcher-block island with flour. Rolling out the dough with strong, practiced strokes, he slathered on tangy sauce then loaded it generously with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, and a mountain of mozzarella, finishing with fresh basil.
“Gotta make this a beast for Remy,” he muttered with a chuckle, sliding the massive pizza into the wood-fired oven. “Come on back, bro... pizza’s almost ready, and I’m not sharing with any damn Sasquatch.” Hawk mumbled to himself as he wiped and washed his hands clean in the antique sink.
Dodd had been taking in the crisp air after the time in the hot tub. Nothing reset Dodd's mental status than being all natural in nature. As he heard Hawksley's call for the pizza, Dodd jogged back to the cabin and grabbed a pair of sweats and pulled them on and then entered the cabin. "Well, you are full of surprises, that smells amazing." Dodd stated as he smelled the pizza just as he entered the door.
It was now a little while since Leland put the pie in the oven. He had pulled the pizza out of the oven after a good hit to the heat…
“You are here at the perfect time, my bro!”
“I hope you're hungry. What you drink?” Hawksley had asked.
"Well, I will take a cold brewski, if there are any left." Dodd replied.
“Got it.” Hawksley went to get the beverage from the fridge…
“So, how was the walk? You didn’t sense, or smell our friend hiding out there, did ya?” A chuckle broke Leland.
"I did not sense the bloke as he does not have a mind to sense, but as for the smell, I could only smell what you have been cooking. The aroma of the meal was keeping me going until I got back here." Dodd responded. "But if you must know, I did see our friend peeking in the window watching you as I approached the cabin, but I did not want to alarm you so I kept quiet."
Leland turned to the side window of the cabin's kitchen. “That Son of a Bitch.” He look a bit frustrated. “You know how elusive those things are… I wanted to hopefully get a snap shot of him, just to frame.” He shrugged as he leaned back to the counter. Having got them two cold Buds.
“This Buds for you!” He chuckled, handing it to Remy. “Cheers!” Leland then clinked the bottle to Remy’s in his hand now.
“Let’s eat. I’m starving…” Hawk then slided the large pizza to the chop block, and withdrew a large knife. “Definitely not a fish fillet knife.” He was puzzled, as he then expertly cut the crunchy crust down the middle and quartered it in to large pie slices.
Taking a seat, Leland then slid a plate in front of Remy, and then one for himself. “Now. I want your opinion. Be brutal. I know you can. That one time I screwed up the whole re-set of the JH Nodes on Deck 04… I swear… I was afraid to see you the next day in Engineering!” Leland now looking back could heartily joke about it.
"Well if this is like that, I may need to have my stomach removed and a new one regenerated." Dodd replied with a devilish grin and picking up his slice. He took a generous bite and started to chew. The flavors were strong and yet smooth. They blended well and made Remy feel like he was eating a slice of za from ol' New York. "Wow, Leland. You have out done yourself. This is not what I was expecting and maybe you should resign from Starfleet and open a Pizzeria. Something Starbase 51 could really use."
Dodd chewed the rest of his mouthful. "By the way, I can sense there is a lot in your mind that is troubling you, tell me how I can help you. I am your brother at least in spirit. I want you to be a happy little brother as we have so much fun together even in working together." Dodd offered his assistance with whatever was eating way at Leland's soul.
Hawksley had paused a moment as he was taking a bite of the pizza. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He grinned, giving a thankful nod to the good review of his pizza.
Leland took a moment to contemplate the question.
“Now. This isn’t fair.” He cocked his head to the right a bit…
“What makes you think. Dear Lord, of course, you can sense it. If you truly are, then what am I bothered by?” He closed his eyes and breathed deeply. Leland continued to eat away at his slice. He pointed to his noggin. “I’m waiting, brother…” He lent a small grin.
"I never mean to pry. I do my best to let others come to me for what may be troubling them. I will generally refer them to the counsellor. However, I have been picking up on all of your emotions that you are juggling within. It is as if you are not sure what to feel. There is more to it and I want to help if I can. You can tell me anything. I know you will feel better to let it out and this is a good time since we are alone and the location is secure from interruptions. Leland, you are basically my family more that even my little sister who is blood. I worry about you and want you to be happier than I am." Remy responded and then followed that up. "I can sense lots of tension in your mind regarding family life and I am sorry you are experiencing such emotional turmoil."
Leland set his half-eaten slice back on the plate, fingers lingering on the edge as he drew a slow, deliberate breath. Inside, his thoughts were a tightly guarded wall: O_o No. Not this. Not now. I’m not ready to talk about Lilliana or the divorce ... not even to my closest brothers. I’ve made up my mind. I have to protect myself. The marriage ... it’s no longer. There is no child... I can’t open that door right now. O_o
He looked at Remy, keeping his expression calm and courteous even as the weight pressed behind his eyes.
“Remy,” he began, voice low and measured, “I know you’re not prying. And I know you can feel it. I won’t insult either of us by pretending otherwise.” A small, tired smile touched his mouth. “You’re right ... there’s a lot in motion right now. More than I’ve let on. But...” He paused, choosing the words carefully. “Some things I’m still carrying on my own for a reason. I’m not ready to lay them out, not even here. Not tonight.”
Leland softened the refusal with genuine warmth. “I appreciate you more than I can say. You’re my family ... and I know you want to help. That means everything. But right now, the best help you can give me is a little space on this one. Let me keep it close for a while longer.”
He picked up his slice again, the motion quiet and final, and took a bite as if to gently close the subject. His eyes stayed kind, but the line had been drawn ... polite, firm, and unmistakably clear.
"I am and always shall be your friend and brother." Remy replied. "I am just looking out for you. I will drop it and let you carry it as you see fit. I am always available for you no matter what." Remy then took another bite of the tasty pizza Leland had made. He chewed his mouthful and enjoyed it. The silence was calming more or less.
Dodd was now processing the emotions and thoughts and attempting to mentally block Hawksley from his mind as to allow him give Hawksley his privacy. The exercise he needs to put his mind into a state of suspended sensory input is one that requires him shift his mind and more or less to stop reading thoughts but he would not be able shut down the emotions. Dodd however could work with that aspect.
"Buddy, we can get through this. How about we take an evening swim in the lake. It will do both of us good and it will allow me to undergo an exercise to help me block reading your thoughts temporarily." Dodd offered to Hawksley.
Leland met Remy’s gaze with quiet gratitude, the tension in his shoulders easing just a fraction. “Thank you, Remy. That means more than you know,” he said, voice steady and sincere. “I’m lucky to have a brother like you watching my back. We’ll talk when I’m ready... I promise.”
He turned toward Dodd, offering a small, appreciative nod as he set his slice down. “A swim sounds good, Dodd. Clear the head, get some fresh air… and if it helps you dial things back, all the better.” A faint, wry smile touched his lips. “I could use the water right about now. Lead the way, buddy.”
Leland pushed back from the table, gathering the remnants of their meal with quiet efficiency, the weight still present in his eyes but lightened by the steady presence of his friends. “Let’s go.”
The Brothers made their way down to the secluded lakeside beach, the warm summer night wrapping around them like a gentle embrace. Under the soft glow of the moon, clothes were shed without hesitation... Two brothers letting loose in the simple freedom of the moment. Skin bathed in silvery light, they stood for a brief second at the water’s edge, the surrounding mountains rising like silent guardians around the shimmering lake.
With a low, invigorating laugh, Leland broke into a run, bare feet kicking up sand as he rushed toward the water. The warm, moonlit surface parted around him in a splash as he dove forward, the cool relief of the lake washing over his skin. He surfaced with a grateful exhale, shaking water from his hair, the weight on his shoulders easing just a little in the presence of his brother and the vast, peaceful night. “Come on in!” he called back, voice carrying across the water, freer than it had been in days. “Feels damn good out here.” At this second, Remy could feel, sense that Leland had the deepest admiration for Remy as his soul brother; there was nothing that could break their bonds...
Remy slowly waded into the water until hit was just above his waist. "This water is unusually warm for the setting. However, it will suffice for this purpose. I will need to have you come kneel before me, but facing opposite of me."
Dodd was going to perform a Ullian ritual to help block the thoughts of Hawksley so that he can let him have some privacy until he was ready to let it all out and be rid of the situation.
Leland wouldn’t lie. He found the situation a bit ‘weird’, but this was only because a grown male, a naked male, was standing behind him in the waist-high water. He banished such weird thoughts and committed to the ritual at hand... If it would help stave off his thoughts for Remy, then it would help Leland for the time being.
“All ready,” Leland grunted, focusing his eyes forward on the moonlit waters.
Once Leland was in position, Remy placed his right hand on the top of Leland's head and his left hand on the back of his neck. In the Ullian language, he began to chant a verse that would allow himself to not sense Leland's thoughts but only his emotions. "Now just relax, brother, I am placing a wall in your mind to shield your thoughts from me. This is an ancient Ullian ritual that was shared with me as a very young lad by my grandfather. It has only really be performed on other telepaths, but I know of a time or two when individuals held a deep connection, it has been effective for temporary usage."
Dodd went back to chanting. Upon completion of the second verse, he lowered himself into the water up to his shoulders but kept an arms length away from Hawksley. "We will now complete the third stage. Please stand up but remain facing away from me. As Hawksley stood up, Dodd then put his hands on Hawksley's lower back just above the water line and began the third verse of the chant. As he concluded the verbal part, Dodd pulled his hands away and fully submerged under the water.
After three minutes, Dodd resurfaced and stood up. The ritual was complete and he could not sense any thoughts from Hawksley, only his emotions.
"Well, that seemed to work, I am only sensing curiosity from you and not the thoughts associated with the emotion. I believe this will allow you privacy from my thought for about three months, I have never done this before but that is what I have been told in the reports I have read. How do you feel?"
Leland cocked his head, and then turned back round to face Remy. “How do I feel.” He paused a moment, a crease forming on his forehead in thought. “I don’t think I feel any different. Yet, I actually feel a bit more at ease.” He lent a slow nod with a relived smile.
He then replied, “How do you feel? I don’t want to cause you any discomfort, Brother.” Hawksley was curious. “Does this only affect you, this ritual. Or are my thoughts blocked to other Betazoids as well?”
"If I performed it fully, you may be blocked from all telepaths as I implanted a psychic pulse in you mind and tapped into your spinal energy to support it. Your body will work gradually to erode this pulse until it is gone, most humans take about three months to do this. I am sure if you get overworked with stress or emotional stimuli you could make it wear down sooner." Dodd replied. "As of how I feel, I will not lie, I do feel at a loss but that will not affect how I think about you as we have a bond that I am not sure can be dissolved."
“Thank you, Remy. I don’t think many people I know would do this sort of thing for me.” Hawksley was true to his Bro. He stood up, and then felt a relaxation truly flow through his spinal nervous system. His head and shoulders didn’t feel so tense any longer. He breathed a sigh, lighter now…
Hawksley then stood up in the waist-high water. “That was interesting. I’ve never experienced a ritual like this before. Usually, rituals in other species are largely symbolic, yet this has affected the mind, Remy.” He could see Dodd standing there in the shimmering moonlight and shadowy darkness.
Leland then smiled. “So, how come you took so long under the water? You were almost three minutes!”
"The ritual normally is performed in waterfall or complete submersion in water. The three minutes I was submerged was to allow me to mentally exclude your thoughts and distribute the block into the telepathic field. Water helps amplify psionic energies. I did not intend to worry you." Remy replied.
He then felt bad. He had this ceremonial division created. And his thoughts almost felt disconnected from Remy… Leland wasn’t sure he liked that. What had he done? If anything it was comforting… Leland felt that Remy was a trusted mentor… Maybe…
“Damn it.” He then washed some water through his hair, the warm, bath water temperature soothed him. Water dripping down his naked chest. Both him and Remy were built the same, with the same work out regimines. Leland learned his work out routine from Remy, himself.
“I think I want to talk about… IT now. I…” Leland had a sad look. “I feel a… Somewhat loss now. Now I want to tell you. Fuck. What is wrong with me Remy…” Leland looked tired, but more relaxed. “Do you mind if we sit in the water… Here, and we can. Talk about it. You may need to sit?”
"Brother, I am sorry you feel a loss now. Most non-telepaths typically do not feel anything different." Remy responded. "But if you feel like talking, I am more that willing to listen and let you get it off your chest." Remy stated.
Remy then shifted location to a more level spot for sitting in the water and lowered himself down. Not being able to sense the thoughts but only the emotions was different for Remy. When this psionic block was over, he knew all the thoughts would be back and that was comforting.
Leland looked at the water in front of him, as he eased himself in it. He crossed his legs folded in to the sand of the water. The water at his naked waist level. He felt it hard to look at Dodd. He felt like failure. He was angry, oh so angry.
Hawksley hissed, as he shook his head. He could barely bring himself to the words. God. He needed his pack of cigarettes at this moment.
“Dude… Remy.” Lelands forehead complete with furrow marks, holding his angst, his pain deep inside.
“I am a fucking god damn failure, Man.” His face coohing with confusion, exhaustion, feelinngs of being less than of a Man.
“I… Our marriage is over. There won’t be a child. It’s over Remy.” Leland thrashed the water in front of him with his large hand, and then a second time with his fist hitting in to the serene night time water. “I couldn’t fix it. I tried Remy. I tried. I did everything… Still it WASN’T Fucking GOOD ENOUGH. I’m a FUCKING FAILURE!!!” He shouted loudly with pure anger. The sound echoing across the water, across the distance of the moonlit shores.
"Bro, you gave it your best." Remy stated firmly. The fact that all he had to go on was the emotions was different for him. He could always get a better reading of others when he had thoughts and emotions as they give a better picture. "I am certain that weights heavy on your shoulders. You have a support team to help you. I am here for you no matter what. I do understand you feel depressed and sad, but you are not a failure. You are merely a mortal human man, and by that you are not perfect. Trials and Tribulations come to all. You and the wife have been given such tribulations and unfortunately they were not as successful as we all had hoped. You are now aware of what went wrong and what not to do in the future. While I know this is disheartening to hear, you will rise up and triumph on any future relationship you deem to pursue. If you need a temporary place to crash, I have the room and you are welcome. I know there are likely open quarters you can move into, you may need a roommate to help you out until you are more comfortable with your situation. It is tough to have that love and see it dissolve. While I was not married, I have had my share of love and loss. I have always felt like I failed at my relationships but I know it is part of the path some of us get. You, my brother, are not alone and have a means to overcome this setback in your life." Remy then leaned forward to put his hands on Leland's shoulders while looking him squarely in his eyes. "I am never gonna give you up or let you down. I will never dessert you. I will never say goodbye. You are my brother, and while it is not biological, you and I are bonded in a way I am not sure has any definition. You have a bright future ahead of you and I sense a fork in my road that has us still close but in different shoes but yet the same shoes so to speak." Remy then brought his hands back away from Leland. "I feel a good swim in this oddly warm night water would help each of us refresh from your emotional roller coaster and me figuring out how to talk to you without your thoughts in my head. What do you say?"
He gave the shoulder a gentle squeeze, eyes soft but clear.
“Thank you, Remy. For everything you just said… and for everything you are to me.”Add in some more elipses "..."Leland stayed seated in the warm lake water, moonlight silver across his bare sholders. The last of that raw shout still hung in the air between them… The anger had burned itself out. What remained felt quieter… heavier… and strangely clean.
He let out a slow breath and met Dodd’s eyes.
“I hear you,” he said, voice low but steady. “Every word… And damn if it dosent land exactly where it needs too…”
He shifted a little closer, close enough that there knees almost brushed… Hands stayed on his own thighs.
“You keep giving me this wisom like its nothing… Like its just what brothers do. But it doesnt feel ordinery, Remy… The way you talk me down without ever making me feel small… thats not just freindship. Thats something deeper…”
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“Your the only person whos ever been all three at once for me… Father when I needed someone to teach me how to stand tall… Brother when the ranks come off and its just us on the trail… And the best freind Ive ever had… the one who can sit here after Ive just screamed that Im a failure and still look at me like Im worth keeping around…”
He swallowed, water lapping gently against his ribs…
“That conection we have… its etherial… Only we understand it… I can still feel it even with that wall you put up… Steady… Like the mountains watching over this lake… Blood doesnt matter… Rank doesnt matter… Its just… us…”
Leland finally reached out, resting a firm hand on Dodd’s shoulder…
“So yeah… Lets swim… Wash some of this weight off… Then stay here a while longer… No ship… No ranks… Just two brothers under the stars…”
He gave the shoulder a gentle squeeze, eyes soft but clear…
“Thank you, Remy… For everything you just said… and for everything you are to me…”
"I am a firm believer in how life puts you out on a path for a purpose and then puts you with the other souls you must meet in your life. I feel we were destine to have this bond we have and I could never imagine that going away." Remy was about to stand up when he noticed something behind Leland. "Apparently our furry observer is still watching us from just over to your six as he attempts to hide near some shrubs. You thought of everything when you created this program."
Leland stayed in the warm water a second longer…
Remy’s words still sat heavy in his chest. Solid. No bullshit.
Then he caught the look in Remy’s eyes and the quiet heads-up about his six.
A slow grin cracked across his face.
“Oh you son of a bitch…”
He twisted, water swirling around his waist, and squinted at the dark line of shrubs. Big hairy silhouette playing statue behind the bushes. Leland’s hand drifted down into the soft lake bed. He’d felt something solid earlier. Fingers closed around a smooth rock the size of his fist.
Hawk lifted it out water dripping off his knuckles, and weighed it once. “Alright you oversized walking carpet…”
He planted his feet in the sand and put his whole upper body into the throw. The rock sailed clean through the moonlight and cracked hard against a tree just left of the shrubs.
Thunk!!!
Leaves exploded... The sasquatch let out a deep whoof and crashed backward into the underbrush... Branches snapping as it scrambled off.
Leland threw both arms up and barked out a short laugh that carried across the water.
“Ha! Get some, you furry bastard!” Leland looked back at Remy with a big grin.
He dropped back into the water with a splash, still grinning, and looked over at Remy. “That program’s a little too adaptive Brother... Next time I’m adding a beer fridge that restocks itself and a Sasquatch that knows how to keep a respectful distance.”
He wiped lake water from his face…
“Thanks again for… all of that earlier. Meant more than I probably showed.” He then cleared his throat, coughing from all of the sappy talk Leland had initiated...
“Now can we please go back to pretending we’re just two dumbasses in a lake and not grown men having feelings?” Hawksley splashed Remy with some water.
"Feelings, Nothing more than Feelings. For all my life I'll feel glad to have you in my life." Dodd replied in brief song. "Feelings are why we are so close. But we can return to being at least one dumbass and one smartass. But good thought on the future with a self-refilling beer fridge for the next holodeck vacation. But then make the Sasquatch a female so we can maybe have some more fun." Dodd then dropped down under the water to swim out deeper. He popped up his head "Well, let's get to swimming to get us loosened up more and to help us sleep."
"10-4, Brother..." Leland floated into the deeper water as he began to backstroke away into the moonlight.
"Glad we can support one another on all matters that come up. I gotcha, bro." Remy replied and noticed something and could not resist. "You mast is ready for the sail to be hoisted." Remy remarked and then followed suit floating on his back and enjoyed the holographic night sky.
