960 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: General Sim Postings
Location: USS Tomcat Marine area
Timeline: BACKPOST - After S'earr's Arrival

[ON]

WO K'Muss was seated at the COs desk, reading Padds. He was feeling a little overwhelmed as this he didn't know really what to do. His training was that of combat and law enforcement. He was also grateful that paperwork wasn't his concern anymore. He had just received a message that a new MCO had been assigned.

"Thank you." He said to himself as he awaited his new CO.

S'earr had been given directions to the marine sections upon arrival to the ship which he committed to memory, along with other key locations of the ship in case his presence there was requested. It was all part of his routine that had been honed from practice and repetition and to date it had yet to fail him.

He'd been advised that in the interim another had been filling in for him and now S'earr had to relieve that individual of the post before he could step into it himself. He stood before the doors and instead of walking straight in as his assigned position permitted, out of respect he pressed the chime to the door and waited.

K'Muss looked up and his ears perked up as well. He put the padd that he was reading aside. He then straightened up his uniform. "Enter." He said

The doors opened and S'earr with a slight duck through the doorframe entered what would soon become his office, but not yet but that didn't stop his trained survey of the room in one go. It was at this moment he encountered Warrant Officer K'muss. Another Caitian of similar appearance though appearing shorter and thinner in buid. S'earr wondered from which part of the Homeworld K'muss hailed from but that was a conversation for another time.

"Warrant Officer K'muss. I am 1st Lieutenant S'earr." S'earr was confident that K'muss knew this already, but it never hurt to be polite on a first encounter. "I have come to relieve you of your post." Even if the assignment was temporary it was not any less important and respect had to be observed.

Some viewed S'earr as rigid, too formal, perhaps K'muss would understand that better than most being a Caitian and seeing that S'earr was from the older and still practiced Caste system.

K'Muss was happy to see another caitian coming to the ship. For so long he had been the only one. His first instinct was to react, but this was still the SFMC. Regulation and duty first always. K'Muss immediately came to attention.

"I stand relieved sir. Warrant officer K'Muss reporting. Personnel padds squared away " he said. K'Muss studied the form of his new CO and a realization hit. This guy was someone to not mess with. This filled him with satisfaction.

'Speaking freely." He began. "I must say I'm glad to see another caitian in the corps, sir "

Even S'earr had to admit that seeing another Caitian on board was somewhat of a refreshing aspect to the deployment. "Few leave the Homeworld yearly, fewer still join Starfleet." Though he could understand why, even now the Homeworld called to him but duty and honour came first. "We remain few within the ranks of Starfleet, even still." S'earr replied.

Then his mood turned to business instead of home. "What is the status of the marine element on board?" He asked.

"Nearly full compliment, sir. Expecting two men back from leave within one week." K'Muss began. "Under suggestions from both Major Janeway and the Captain training drills have begun organized under the old paintball game. Stressing small unit tactics. Also familiarity with various arms "

"Do we have a complete leadership structure or are there gaps present?" S'earr wasn't against promotion reviews, they just ate a lot of time and sometimes....his patience.

"No gaps I've noticed." K'Muss began. " But we have had multiple COs. Aside from you and me, we have by my count three senior NCOs acting as platoon leaders "

"I'd like to meet them, if the unit is to function then the command element has to have an understanding of each other." S'earr then paused. "Are there any troubled elements within the ranks? Discord between marines, underperformance, reluctance to recertify, failing fitness marks."

"No disciplinary issued that I've noticed, sir. Corporal Packard however has met all of those criteria." K'Muss replied. "Shevis currently in the brig. she recently got into an issue during a training session."

That caught S'earr's attention. "The brig?" He turned to face his fellow Caitian. "Explain this..issue." While S'earr knew that marines could get into it from time to time, work hard, play hard.

As some marines put it at least.

"Nothing disciplinary. Just a stupid argument that started to escalate. The brig was just used to defuse it."

"Very well." S'earr was content that as long as the issue was settled, he'd leave it at that. "I would be interested to hear any thoughts or recommendations you have about the detachment. Having seen for yourself while filling in, the perspective can change, so any thoughts or considerations for improvements are welcome."

"Good point." K'Muss said. "Like I said, we've had multiple COs." He began. "As for suggestions or considerations, I cant think of any right off the bat."

"Very well. I won't keep you, there is plenty to be done while I settle in. New CO's are always bound to take time to adjust to and I'd to make sure its done smoothly. Any assistance you can give in that aspect will be welcomed." S'earr was ready to get started, to hit the ground running.
